Who Was The Better Mr. Darcy — Colin Firth or Matthew MacFadyen???
Colin firth all the way with Matthew Rhys as a comfortable second! I love the aesthetics of the 2005 and MacFadyen is great but his Darcy plays out as being shy rather than proud. Also, I think Colin firth really managed to balance out the brooding with some subtle smiles! Plus the 1995 series really captures the wry humour which for me is really the highlight of Austen’s novel. More on reddit.com

I didn't like Colin Firth as Mr Darcy, please let me explain why.
Socially awkward Darcy is Macfadyen's addition to the P&P canon, and it really stuck. Before then, I don't think it would have been possible to make the case that Darcy doesn't know how to people. He's perfectly knowledgeable of social boundaries and niceties... he simply cannot be bothered to perform them for people he considers his inferiors. He excels at them when he does, and everyone whom he does not held in contempt perceives him as nice and charming and praiseworthy (if a bit rough around the edges.) His unpleasantness, when shown, is perfectly intentional. This is why Pemberley is a more significant turn in 1995 and the book - him being nice to the Gardiners shows a greater change of heart. It's his pride, not his awkwardness, getting in the way. Firth played him as such. I certainly agree with how Macfadyen's version is a more ideal romantic hero - that is the Darcy I'd prefer to marry, for sure. But it's a far more liberal interpretation than Firth's, who pretty much played Darcy by the book. More on reddit.com

Out of the Archives, 2001-2004: Colin Firth on playing Mr. Darcy - Golden Globes
June 5, 2025 - Colin Firth, winner of the Best Actor Golden Globe for The King’s Speech (2010) by Tom Hooper, spoke to the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2001 and 2004 about playing Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy in the TV miniseries Pride and Prejudice (1995) from the 1831 novel by Jane Austen, and a modern version named Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) with Renée Zellweger from Helen Fielding’s novels.

Pride and Prejudice (TV Mini Series 1995) ⭐ 8.8 | Drama, Romance
January 14, 1996 - Jennifer Ehle has done the impossible - she is, and in my mind, forever will be, Elizabeth. The beauty, wit, and sparkling liveliness of the character are perfectly captured in her performance.

Colin Firth or Matthew Macfadyen? There Should Be Room in Pride & Prejudice Fans’ Hearts For Both Mr. Darcys
November 15, 2025 - His performance was so iconic, in fact, that it helped make him a star — and he sort of reprised his role in the Bridget Jones’ Diary series, where his character Mark Darcy was based on his portrayal of Darcy in the miniseries.

r/PrideandPrejudice on Reddit: Who Was The Better Mr. Darcy — Colin Firth or Matthew MacFadyen???
July 22, 2023 -

I’m sure this has been debated here before, so please be patient with me...

I’m torn.

Colin Firth was an amazing dark, brooding Darcy. Firth is the master of the barely perceptible smile that takes him from standoffish to extraordinarily handsome and approachable. And I know the BBC version is far more accurate. And well Firth soaking wet from diving into the water…quite quite lovely.

But MacFadyen was a much more passionate, vulnerable Darcy that I adored. I mean, “I love you…most ardently.” And later still, “I love…I love…I love you.” Which I fear Jane Austen never wrote.

So I’m leaning towards MacFadyen. I will admit, however, I’ve seen the movie a bazillion times and just binged the BBC series for the first time.

Someone here suggested, you fall in love with the first version you’ve ever seen. And I have to say, the sweeping music…Darcy striding across the field at sunrise…his passionate declarations…pretty much did me in.

I think it’s MacFadyen for me.

Please don’t kill me or criticize me too harshly. I fear - I KNOW - I haven’t been the Jane Austen purist that I should be…

I’m actually afraid to hit “Post”!

April 13, 2025 - Who can forget that iconic lake scene, when Mr. Darcy, played by Colin Firth, emerges dripping from the lake, white shirt clinging to his body? Austen herself has several times been quoted as saying the scene fits so seamlessly into her story that she can’t believe she didn’t include it.

Twenty years ago, Colin Firth Jumped Into a Lake : All About Romance
June 23, 2017 - Here in the U.S. it was on A&E network which was definitely not considered a top station and I wondered why PBS wasn’t showing it. I was a little afraid it wouldn’t be first rate and (blasphemy!) wasn’t sold on Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy as I remembered him mostly from the 1984 TV adaptation of Camille and wasn’t blown away by him.

Is Colin Firth the best on-screen Mr. Darcy? - Quora
Colin Firth is also by far the most popular on-screen Darcy, for good reason. He was suitably tall, dark, handsome, and aloof, and had the good fortune to be cast in the finest adaptation of Pride and Prejudice that will ever be produced.
