Is the DMV *actually* appointment only?
There are two types of DMVs: the state and the county. The state ones are by appointment only and you HAVE to go there for brand new drivers licenses and permits. There is only one state office in the Springs (at Union and Van Buren). The state offices only do drivers licenses, not registrations. But as long as you have a license already, even from another state, you can do it at the county offices. The county offices basically contract with the state to help with existing drivers license transfers (out-of-state switching to a Colorado license) or renewals. They also do all vehicle registrations and renewals. If you are coming from out of state, you will need your physical out-of-state license and a full size birth certificate or passport as well as proof of residency (utility bill or something with your name and address). The county is walk in only, no appointments. There are several offices: Garden of the Gods, Powers and Airport, Union Town Center (north), and Fort Carson. Powers and Airport is very busy but the lines go pretty fast. Saturdays at Union Town Center are fast too as it is extra staffed with clerks from all locations. And the greeters at the county offices are there to help you make sure you are at the right place and that you have all the documentation you need. Source: I am married to one of the county greeters. DMV has no appointments until 9/18, what do I do for the rules requiring License within 30 days and expired registration?
Make your dmv appointment and carry a copy of the confirmation in your glove box. Things like registration are so poorly enforced around here your chances of getting pulled over are almost zero. Also as far as your drivers license and plates you actually go to different offices, you should be able to walk in for a plate I believe. More on reddit.com

Remember in CO driver licenses are handled by the state, your registration/plates are by the county. The state license offices are still on appointment only, but you can go anywhere. Some of the more rural locations have better availability, I see appointments in Lamar and La Junta tomorrow. Same for Craig and Cortez. Alamosa has them next week. Yes it is ridiculous, but if you need it now, that's your best bet. More on reddit.com
DMV woes -- Moved from out of state but no appointments for license transfer within 30 days?
They don’t actually care if you transfer your drivers license within 30 days. I waited more than a year to switch my license over, and there were no issues. More on reddit.com

The state DMV requires appointments for most driver license and ID card services. Walk-in availability is extremely limited and not guaranteed. We strongly recommend booking an appointment to ensure you can be served. Some county offices allow walk-ins but is not guaranteed. A REAL ID is credential that is compliant with the federal REAL ID Act. In Colorado, all first time permits, license and ID cards are REAL ID compliant.
