Key differences between point source speakers and column array systems
For point sources — in the far field — sound is perceived to emanate from a single point in space. Whereas with column loudspeakers — depending on your vantage point — sound appears to emanate along the entire radiating surface. Proportional to the height of the loudspeaker. Point-sources exhibit a spherical wavefront, whose sound level drops with 6 dB per distance doubling. Whereas column loudspeakers, depending on your vantage point and frequency, exhibit a cylindrical wavefront whose — axial — sound level drops only with 3 dB per distance doubling. Point source directivity can be improved by virtue of, e.g., horns. Whereas column loudspeakers archive directivity by committee. Where directivity can be further improved with beam-steering techniques. https://www.merlijnvanveen.nl/en/study-hall/193-cylindrical-waves-hyped-or-not More on reddit.com

Column-array speakers
Not going to get a lot of love from the snooty contrarians but I bought a pair EV50's 5-6 years ago and they have changed everything! I can easily get my entire setup in my Explorer, load-in and have everything running in twenty minutes. However, I have learned that, alone, they will struggle with 150+ people and something the size of an elementary school gym (not that most people will notice a drop in sound quality but you will). Around a year ago, I bought a QSC KS112 sub - it adds maybe five minutes to my setup. Now, for 150-250 people and larger-but-not-huge rooms, I turn the bass down a bit on the EVs, let the KS112 handle most of the heavy lifting and I can easily fill the room. It sounds great. Do they throw as well as my traditional tops/bottoms cabinet speakers? Nope - maybe 70%. But I now take more fun-but-lower-payng gigs because of the small footprint, quick/easy setup and I don't need my trailer. I've easily made my money back threefold and love DJing again. Hell, I did two gigs for free last week because they were fun, quick and easy. When I purchased these, I did a side-by-side, in-person comparison with Bose and a third column-array speaker (can't remember the brand). I thought the EVs were slightly more punchy than the Bose and every bit as crisp....and a lot less $$$. The third option was garbage. Pro tip: Get a Denon Prime Go, a ProX Z stand and load it all in with just one trip on a rock'n'roller cart (including two Gigbar Moves and stands). Heaven. More on reddit.com

Column Line Array Speakers vs QSC K Series
From my limited experience with column arrays, I've actually been somewhat surprised by how nice they sounded while playing back prerecorded music. I would NEVER consider using them for live sound however because they often have very wide horizontal dispersion which adds many additional challenges when it comes to properly deploying a PA system. In addition to that (again speaking from limited knowledge), I believe that most of these column arrays do not output sound at a very high volume, and you should not expect the same level of sound to come out of them as your K series speakers before clipping occurs, especially if you're using something higher up the chain than the basic K12s. Traditional boxes are also much more versatile in being able to take different roles (monitors, delays, fills, etc.) if you plan on growing your company. TLDR: For coffee house gigs, maybe. For DJ gigs, maybe. But if you're not vehemently opposed to the traditional speaker on stick look, just stay with that. More on reddit.com

Live Array Column PA Systems
IMO a column PA is perfect for a small acoustic setup but horrible for a full band. If you're thinking of eventually expanding to a full band skip the column and go straight to a regular PA. For a column system check out Turbosound. More on reddit.com

Pretty much what the title says. Right now I work with a db technologies es1002 column array PA but have lately seen many point source speakers around my zone and made me ask myself about the differences between these two types of systems and why would anyone choose any of them.

I have to say that the es1002 fits my necessities in quite a nice way, specially the coverage and quality of sound, though I suspect it has a lot of leakage from behind producing some feedback when not placed correctly.

This means that the volume in front of the speakers will be about the same as it is to the left or right of the speaker. It gives the audience a smoother, more uniform sound across the dance floor. Just be careful when using column arrays for long-throw applications as the actual drivers are traditionally much smaller than those found in line arrays or traditional 2-way speakers.

In spaces such as this, we can sometimes still correct problems with signal processing, but other times it’s better to consider another type of speaker. Point sources can certainly be used in straightforward architectural spaces, but where they really excel compared to the other types is in spaces with odd architecture. If you have many small spaces to cover that are relatively isolated, this can be achieved with point sources by simply selecting a box with the right coverage pattern for each separate space. In fact, even when a line array or column array is chosen as the main sound system, it is very common to still use some point sources as fill speakers to supplement the coverage.

What's your guys take on those fancy column-array speakers?

I'm currently running a 10+ years old HK actor DX set (double 15" sub, 12" top per side) for most of my gigs.
It's quite a big and heavy set, and i'd like to slim down a bit. The tops are 30 kilo's a piece, which is a pain to set up. The set is sturdy but also looks a bit intimidating. Also takes a lot of space in transport and storage.

I was looking to replace it with a more powerful setup; one sub/one top a side (15" + 12"), thinking EV/QSC. Maybe even go for 18" subs, however those require a lot of space and muscle power.

In my search and comparison, i noticed the column-array speakers. Read online, watched some video's, and some say that there are sets (Maui 44 G2 for example), who can handle up to 200 people crowds.

Most of my gigs are weddings, party's at sporting venue's, birthdays and more of that stuff.

I like the sleek look, ease of setup and lack of needed space of those column-array speakers, but is their sound comparable to a good 'traditional' setup?

Any tips for sets to look into for party's up to 200 people?

I have a pair of EV Evolve50s. And I LOVE them. I’ve used them for weddings of up to 600 people. Remember, it’s a WEDDING. You’re never going to have 100% of the guests on the dance floor, and even then, you don’t need to be rattling grandmas teeth. For school dances, they’re good for about 200 kids. For larger schools, I add subwoofers and some extra fill speakers.
