If the .com domain is still the gold standard ? Why are there now hundreds of other domain extensions ?
It’s still the gold standard but others are becoming acceptable and brandable. There’s also fads that seem to be cyclical. .ly was popular for a while and .io, now .ai Most of the others a pretty dogshit though. If consumers aren’t aware of them, I wouldnt touch it. Let the big corps make them popular first and teach the public on their dime. More on reddit.com

Can websites with just a .com outrank competition using country domains eg .AU .UK .NZ
From my experience, TLD plays no role. What plays a role is your content. If your website's linking, and got a lot links to UK-oriented websites, you'll rank well in the UK. If France, you'll rank well in France, etc. My site's .COM and I'm outranking my competitors with ccTLDs. In Sweden, .NU domains are just as popular as .SE domains for traditional reasons ("nu" means now in Sweden and has for decades been used as a TLD for Swedish websites, TV.nu, etc). These websites haven't been outranked by an .SE competitor, nor have they decided to switch to .SE. In the US, few .US websites rank. In the UK, few .CO.UK websites rank in proportion to .COM. Paddypower.com, Ladbrokes.com, most are .COM domains. What benefit would it give to Google to favor .CO.UK domains in the UK over .COM domains, if both target the UK market? What's a more reliable way to differentiate between UK-oriented websites and US-oriented websites? The TLDs can easily be spoofed. What can't be spoofed is the content of the actual websites, the in-going and out-going links. These are what determine your GEO. Do you link to the UK-government on your website? Do you get links from websites that link to the UK-government? Visualize a map that plots links from one website to another and it's colored by country, where'd your website be plotted on such a map? That's a more reliable way for Google to rank. Had they favored the TLD's it'd put .IO domains, .AI domains, .COM domains at a disadvantage for no real reason. It'd segregate the internet and favor ccTLDs over international websites despite what website's better for no real reason aside from who got what TLD. It's the content that matters, the TLD's very marginal. What matters is your content and your links. Google understands those well enough to know what country it is you're targeting without trusting that you do the right decision with your TLD More on reddit.com
