The issue was a bit difficult to find: that shortcut is linked to "Search with Google". But the result is that Safari is launched - with whatever is in the clipboard as the search query to google.

The resolution is to uncheck the "Search with Google" checkbox in the services | shortcuts | searching area. Afterwards the Mac shortcut for bulleted paragraph works properly (and always)

r/Bitwarden on Reddit: "Cmd + Shift + L" autofill shortcut not working in Safari
March 21, 2022 -

I think this happened either after I updated macOS to 12.3 or after Bitwarden updated to 1.32.0.

I've tried these:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Bitwarden two times; once normally and once with AppCleaner to delete all Bitwarden-related files

  • Safari's shortcut for Show Sidebar and Hide Sidebar is also Cmd + Shift + L, so I changed that to something else

  • In macOS, there is a shortcut for "Search with Google" that's set to Cmd + Shift + L by default, so I changed that as well

None of them have worked. The only time I can get it to work is when I disable the extension (in Safari - Preferences - Extensions) and then re-enable it. Even then it only works one time and then stops working which is really weird lol.

I don't think it's a shortcut overlap problem because it worked fine for a few months, even when the Sidebar and Search with Google shortcuts were Cmd + Shift + L. I'm not sure what even caused it. I think the only other app I installed around the time this started happening is called Rectangle but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

For now I'm using Cmd + Shift + Y and then using my mouse to click the account that I want to autofill.

I'd appreciate any help.

I’m also experiencing the lack of hotkey. Ugh. I installed the update last night and now I wish I hadn’t. I get one hotkey use per opening of Safari (or unchecking and rechecking the extension). That’s it. However, I noticed the context menu (right click) does still work. So that’s the workaround in the meantime. Or, as you said, cmd+shift+Y and click. Unfortunately I upgraded both Safari and Bitwarden last night, so it’s hard to pinpoint which one is the cause of the issue. I’m still on Big Sur though (11.6.5) so I think you can safely rule out Monterey. Unless that included an update to Safari? To be crystal clear, here’s what I did: Last night I applied Safari 15.4 and then shortly thereafter I updated (from the App Store) to Bitwarden desktop app 1.32.0 (which contains the Safari extension 1.56.6). I hadn’t noticed that the hotkey wasn’t working because I’m off today and I have only logged into one site today (so the hotkey worked). I’m glad to know about this today so that I won’t be banging my head against the wall tomorrow morning trying to login to a gazillion things. I don’t have time right now, but later I’ll look to see if this has been reported on GitHub yet. I hope they rush a fix for this because it is definitely an inconvenience not having use of the hotkey. Also, I have not logged all the way out and back in yet. Have you? Let me know if that somehow fixes the issue and I’ll do the same. Offtopic: I’ve also noticed lately that there’s a bug with unlocking with biometrics. Very often the vault does not stay unlocked. Doesn’t happen with a PIN. I’ll look on GitHub for that one, too.

Hi everyone and thanks for flagging the issue. We're currently tracking it here . For now, you can use the following workaround: This appears to occur only when the extension is unlocked through an autofill attempt (CMD+SHIFT+L); If you unlock the Safari extension the moment you open Safari, either by clicking on it or by pressing CMD+SHIFT+Y, the extension would then operate as expected and match and autofill vault items consistently.

All You Need is the Command-L Keyboard Shortcut - by Christian Boyce
September 24, 2024 - Since this is not usually what you want, and it’s something I get calls about all the time (“My mail keeps disappearing as soon as I read it”) I think you should try this while you’re thinking about it so you can see how it works, so you can undo it when you next do it by accident down the road. In the Apple Address Book, Command-L toggles between the Editing view and the non-Editing view. Faster and easier than reaching for the mouse and clicking “Edit.” · In Preview, Command-L rotates the document to the left. ... In Safari, and in Firefox, Command-L sends focus to the address bar (the place where you normally click to type “www.christianboyce.com” or possibly some other site).
