I've thought about this before. Some common names exist that are variations of their scientific name: Tyrannosaur = Tyrannosaurus (rex). Raptor = Velociraptor (or any Dromaeosauridae) This isn't exactly analogous to modern practice unless you count "Panther" as a common name for Panthera onca and Panthera pardus. In some ways, Land Before Time gets this right. Answer from pgm123 on reddit.com

However, Brontosaurus’ name was recently changed to Apatosaurus, meaning ‘deceptive lizard’. This is because its bones were thought to belong to mosasaurs when they were first discovered. Iguanodon: Iguanodon translates as ‘iguana teeth’. It was discovered in the 1820s by Mary Ann Mantell, who thought the dinosaur’s teeth looked like those of a modern iguana.

r/Paleontology on Reddit: Dinosaur Common Names?
September 20, 2019 -
I was randomly thinking about prehistoric critters at work today, and I got to wondering... We know and call dinosaurs by their scientific names, even dino fans who aren't very into the science side of things, unlike modern animals where it's usually the other way around; most people wouldn't call a domestic dog "canis lupus familiaris" or "canis" for short, for example. Why don't any dinos have common names (that I'm aware of)? And what would you paleo enthusiasts call your favorite species of dinosaur if they went by a common name?

"Duck-billed dinosaurs" for Hadrosaurs. I think the reason we don't have common names for dinosaurs is that they were discovered and named by scientists, in comparison to, say, cows, which were domesticated before science was a thing. Scientists came along and started putting animals like cows into categories with all these scientific names, but of course people still used the old names for everyday animals. But then scientists discovered dinosaurs and gave them brand new names in the scientific format, so people mostly adopted the scientific names for them because that's what they were introduced as.

3 days ago - Adrian Hunt, in his unpublished dissertation, proposed the name "Cryptoraptor lockleyi" for the specimen, but the name was never adopted, and was first referred to in the scientific literature in a 2007 redescription of Late Triassic North American material thought to belong to dinosaurs. In the redescription, the authors found the material to belong to an intermediate archosaur, as no features exclusive to dinosaurs could be identified. "Cryptotyrannus" (meaning "secret/hidden tyrant"), more commonly known as the "Merchantville tyrannosauroid", is an informally named tyrannosauroid dinosaur that lived in the Merchantville Formation.

5 days ago - While dinosaurs were ancestrally bipedal (as are all modern birds), some evolved into quadrupeds, and others, such as Anchisaurus and Iguanodon, could walk as easily on two or four legs. Cranial modifications like horns and crests are common dinosaurian traits, and some extinct species had bony armor.
