Due Windows I can resist my from distraction, now I get the permission to install kali linux on my home pc. Due to system requirements I have to take this step and virtual machine does suck a lot
Decided to move away from Windows and switch to linux fully. Played around with different distributions beginning with Redhat 4 in the 90s.
I've been using Kali as the main OS for about 20 months now. I've read that everyone out there doesn't recommend that but I've done it nevertheless. There were no specifics given on why not, merely generic statements like 'kali is a security tool, not a day to day OS'.
Assumptions:
- Debian based, rolling release - not a big fan of version releases
- bleeding edge kernels and security
- a lot of professionals use it, therefore there's a need out there to have it working, so I'll just tag along
Usage:
- i5, RX580, 64GB RAM, SSDs 120GB, 120GB, 240GB, 400GB, 512GB, HDD 1TB, 2TB
- VMs for lab testing
- Gaming via Steam
- rsync to sync cloud storage locally
- snap for specific packages Opera, Spotify ...
- Day to day internet usage, webex, zoom
Issues encountered along the way:
- never got wayland to work with my video card
- issues with compiling vmware kernel modules, and a couple of times I've ended up using the previous kernel. Usually these got fixed fast, 1-2 weeks
- all my Icons/widget configuration in KDE once disappeared. I've setup new ones. A couple of months later after some update the new config was gone and the older one gone missing
- Issues related to ID10T errors - ran our of space on /boot partition and on /var partition. This led to issues with package config caches but I've eventually sorted those out
Now about two years later, I've decided to replay Cyberpunk 2077, so I ended up getting a new computer altogether, and the question came up again. What system should I install. So I ended up installing kali as the main OS again. Still the online community message was the same ... not recommended.
- R9 4700 3.7Ghz, 64Gb RAM, R7800XT, SSD 2TB, 2TB
- had issues with the video card R7800XT and needed to get updated firmware
- using LVM and only one partition (I know .. again not recommended :P ) this time so there shouldn't be more problems with limited storage
Created this post to let curious people know what could be the experience when using kali as the main OS.
