What is CompTIA Security+?
CompTIA Security+ is a widely recognized cybersecurity certification that validates the essential knowledge and skills needed to secure computer systems and protect data. It covers a wide range of topics related to network security, threats and vulnerabilities, identity management, access control, cryptography, and security best practices. CompTIA Security+ is vendor-neutral, meaning it provides a broad understanding of cybersecurity principles and is not tied to any specific technology or platform.
What skills do I need to learn for CompTIA Security+?
To earn the CompTIA Security+ certification, you need to develop the following skills:
- Network Security: Understanding network protocols, securing network devices, implementing firewalls, and monitoring network traffic for potential threats.
- Threats and Vulnerabilities: Familiarity with common types of cybersecurity threats, including malware, social engineering, phishing, and network attacks.
- Identity and Access Management: Knowledge of authentication methods, access controls, user provisioning, and secure account management practices.
- Cryptography: Understanding encryption algorithms, digital signatures, public key infrastructure (PKI), and secure communication protocols.
- Risk Management: Ability to identify and assess security risks, implement risk mitigation strategies, and develop incident response and disaster recovery plans.
- Security Technologies: Familiarity with security tools and technologies, such as intrusion detection systems (IDS), antivirus software, and vulnerability scanners.
- Security Policies and Procedures: Knowledge of security policies, compliance requirements, and best practices for securing systems and data.
- Secure Software Development: Awareness of secure coding practices, software vulnerabilities, and the importance of integrating security into the software development lifecycle.
- Threat Intelligence and Analysis: Skills in collecting and analyzing threat intelligence data to identify emerging threats and proactively mitigate risks.
- Ethical and Legal Considerations: Understanding ethical hacking principles, legal frameworks, privacy regulations, and professional codes of conduct.
What are the benefits of taking an online Comptia Security+ course?
Online Comptia Security+ courses offer a convenient and flexible way to enhance your knowledge or learn new Comptia Security+ skills. Choose from a wide range of Comptia Security+ courses offered by top universities and industry leaders tailored to various skill levels.
The course is relatively new. I got an email about coursera launching the course while studying for the CCNA, and I thought what the heck, might as well work on this course too and get a nice discount for Security+.
So from what I understood, you complete the entire Google Cybersecurity Certification program and you earn a discount voucher (or something similar) that saves you 30% for if/when you take the Security+ exam.
These exam prices are outrageous for where I live (3rd World country in Southeast Asia) so I've basically been relying on auditing courses, applying for financial aid, and just waiting for some nice discounts to come up...
I thought this update might be useful for others in my situation wanting to save $$ while transitioning to cybersecurity.

Hope it helps!
Edit v2.0:
The Google course isn't included, I just had people confirm that The American Dream Academy only has the IBM Cybersecurity Certification and a few other certification programs from popular vendors/institutions that are completely free.
I'll leave the link to the program here for US residents, hoping it still helps some people out.
