r/CompTIA on Reddit: Where can I get better price for a Security+ voucher?
December 21, 2022 -

Hey guys,
Im thinking of taking the exam for security+, however I was under the wrong impression that it would cost me around 350-370 bucks, which appears to not be the case. If I get the voucher from Pearson VUE, its 470$, I checked Dion, but he doesnt offer vouchers for my eastern european country. I then went to Professor Messer and he has an explicit warning that his vouchers are only for people who are physically in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, or Guam.

Is there a place where I could save some money on the exam, since nearly 500 bucks is a bit too much for me.
Thank you in advance!

Edit: I found a way to discount it a bit. If i buy a voucher directly from Comptia, instead of Pearson VUE, I can get it for 390$ and I can use an additional 10% discount with a code - "ITCareers10". This makes the total cost 350$ which is a lot better.

I’m looking at the CompTIA site and I see a price of $339 to take the SY0-501 exam in the US. Does this sound right? My impression was that it was closer to $180 in the past and didn’t know if I missed something.

r/CompTIA on Reddit: Security+ Passed in 2 weeks on a budget!
November 11, 2024 -

I am a tech consultant who started recently on a networking engagement. A contract requirement was obtaining Security+ within 6 months of the project. Cue family/life drama and I'm 4 months into my deadline, get stressed and start studying. My job covered the 1st exam, but no prep materials, and no retakes for a few months, so there was no room for error, and I'm generally cheap. In total, my prep cost me $35

I used the following:

- $35/month: you can apply for Udemy unlimited, which gives you access to Jason Dion's course.
- ^ included: This also gives you access to his study guide and 7 practice exams.
- Free: A few YouTube videos going over ports
- Free: Quizlet to test ports, and acronyms
- Free: A few more YouTube videos describing all the acronyms and short blurbs about their functions.

I always like to have something playing when I'm working/cleaning/driving anyways so I crammed all of these lessons. I took all of a Saturday to really grind out all the practice exams, and refresh concepts, and then took the exam on Sunday. Scored a 780, but passing is passing!

I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I was surprised at how easy some of the questions were (Mostly the fishing, physical security, and best practice ?'s).

I've taken a few AZ certs in the past which are much more technical, and this gave me a lot of anxiety that the practice questions were just too high level and not reflective of the exam. I was very happy to find this wasn't the case.

I was in IT for a long time before biting the bullet and going to med school. The Network+ exam used to be just one exam and roughly $250 (circa 2008). Now it's two exams at $380 each? I appreciate the need for controlling the amount of exams in circulation, but this is excessive.

r/CompTIA on Reddit: Why pay for the test + retake?
February 6, 2024 -

Hi all,

I was looking at the prices for A+ test and seen the price was $253 for the test alone, but the test voucher + a retake comes to $507. Only a dollar more, but I’m curious as to why some people spend the money for a voucher with a retake.

I feel that if you only had the test voucher you’d be more inclined to want to do better, no?

r/CompTIA on Reddit: Security+ Exam Voucher Discount Rates
August 27, 2025 -

I’m trying to wrap my head around CompTIA’s Security+ voucher pricing. When I talked to them directly, they said the only place to buy vouchers is from them. ( Yet I read here that partners all just do ~10% off all day)

But then I see places like Training Camp and GetCertified4Less offering 15%-20% off**.** Meanwhile, every other cert I’ve done (Cisco, Microsoft, ISC2, etc.) has basically one set price, MAYBE a student discount, and that’s it.

Why is CompTIA all over the place with pricing? Why does it feel like there are 10+ different “official” prices floating around?

For context, I’m not new to this. I hold multiple technical certs already. Just curious if there’s a reason CompTIA is so different here.

FYI I am trying to budget, hence the question.

I was just looking at the CySA+ cert and it costs $400. That's ridiculous. I don't want to spend that much money. If CompTIA is a non profit shouldn't their certs cost like 20 or 30 dollars? Why 400 dollars?

Doing business costs money. Even non-profits have expenses. Buildings, employees, research, exam proctors, etc. Their certs are some of the most inexpensive on the market.

CompTIA ( Computing Technology Industry Association) is a non-profit 501(c)(6), federal tax-exempt LOBBY/trade association. Their membership is made of just about every mainstream computer hardware, software and service company that you've ever heard of, and many that you haven't. Members include industry rivals but they come together under the CompTIA umbrella membership for their mutual benefit. They have multiple revenue streams including their certification program, their educational programs and other, less visible, programs. They don't make a profit but they spend a LOT of money in lobbying efforts, promotion and other benefits TO THEIR MEMBERS and PARTNERS. Their exec and board staff are WELL paid from the revenue streams. Don't think for a moment that they're here for those of us who benefit from their certification programs. They run them at a gain to fill their coffers to benefit their member organizations. Any benefit that we derive is almost a side-effect. $350 for the Security+, Over $200 for A+. That is just a scam for some test on your basic knowledge in the IT field.

And the biggest flag this company is a scam is their product is exams. That's what they do, sell exams. They've managed to convince people entering the field their "vendor neutral" certificate somehow adds value to a candidates resume.

Folks starting out in IT, don't waste your money on these certs. They are grossly overpriced, they provide little value, and if you are wanting certs there are many vendor certs much cheaper that provides better value.
