Hey Guys,

I want to pursue the CompTIA Security+ cert. However, on the website, it says SY0-701 will be coming out in November. SYO-601 will expire in July 2024.

My questions are:

  1. should I wait to buy the SYO-701 or just get the 601 voucher. With the 701 there may be new questions and can be harder to pass. There are not many free exam prep materials anywhere for that. However, with 601 there are loads of material out there.

  2. Also, can I get the 601 voucher by July 2024 and write the exam in August or must it be done by July? When getting the 601 will it still be valid for the 3 years?

3) Can I pass the exam in 8 months if I dedicate 2 hours per day?

4) To get the security + is it just the one exam SYO-601 or something do we have write 2 like the A+.

5) Finally, what are some good study materials/practice tests/labs/videos for the Security +.

Please understand the difference (in IT certification terms) between "expire" and "retire"... Expire: this is what happens if you get certified and you fail to take all of the necessary steps to renew it within the three-year renewal window. Certifications expire. Retire: this is what certifying organizations do to old versions of exams. When that happens, that version of the exam is no longer available to be taken. Exams retire. 601 is retiring–not expiring–in July 2024. You would no longer have the option of taking 601 after July, but that same voucher could be used for 701. If you were to take the 601 and pass it, your certification status would be exactly the same as someone who'd taken and passed 701. Your certification would have an initial expiration date of three years from the day you passed.

CompTIA has officially posted the release date of SY0-701 and the retirement of the SY0-601 exam.

According to https://www.comptia.org/certifications/security, the SY0-701 exam launches November 7, 2023.

As per normal procedures at CompTIA, the SY0-601 will be available during the first six months of the new exam. It will retire in July, 2024.

Where did you see that SY0-701 will release on July 31st? CompTIA has not posted a release date - not even to the educational partners who create courseware for the exam. SY0-601 Security+ was launched November 12, 2020. That usually means that the replacement (presumably SY0-701) will release in November of 2023 (3 years later) and the exam for the existing/older one will retire six months after that - about mid-May of 2024. (There is a normally a six-month overlap where the new exam and the old exam are both offered) So, if some form of cybersec is in your career future, it is certainly worth pursuing the current SY0-601 Security+ certification. There's plenty of time. As has been pointed out, passing whichever exam is offered at a given time makes you Security+ certified. Your certificate doesn't say SY0-601 or SY0-701. Is says "Security+" and is good for three years from the date you pass the exam, irrespective of any exams are retired or new ones that are offered during those three years. Best in your studies!
