Algorithms for Image Processing and Computer Vision, Second Edition
Image processing books (Advanced/Expert)
Congratulations and well done! I'd look at both image processing and software engineering books in equal measure, you need both skills. CV books I think you should own: Image Processing - Gonzalez & Woods Computer Vision - Forsyth & Ponce Multi view geometry - Hartley & Zisserman For software dev I'd always have a copy of Design Patterns on the shelf,an Introduction to Algorithms and also something like Clean Code. There are so many good books out there I'm looking forward to hearing other recommendations. More on reddit.com

Solution for Occlusion problem
A very naive way to do this would be to binarize your images in order to segment the pieces of cotton you need to detect. If the images you have to process are all similar to the ones you provided, the cotton pieces are clearly whiter than anything else in your image. Therefore you could select a high threshold in order to binarize your image. Then you could use morphological operations to smooth your segmentation. If it works well you can detect occlusions when your segmentation produces only one area instead of two.
Hope it helps!
More on reddit.comWhat are the key stages in the digital image processing system, and how do they contribute to the functionality of computer vision applications?
The key stages in a digital image processing system include image acquisition, pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction, object recognition, image analysis, visualization, and implementation. Image acquisition captures digital images using cameras or scanners. Pre-processing involves correcting image distortions and enhancing features. Segmentation divides the image into regions based on pixel characteristics. Feature extraction identifies relevant information from these regions. Object recognition identifies specific objects within the image. Image analysis uses mathematical technique

What role does image segmentation play in feature extraction and object recognition within computer vision systems?
Image segmentation plays a critical role in feature extraction and object recognition by dividing an image into meaningful regions based on pixel characteristics. This segmentation allows for easier identification and analysis of distinct parts of an image. In feature extraction, segmentation simplifies the identification of relevant features like edges and textures from specific regions, facilitating accurate object recognition. By clearly delineating objects and their boundaries, segmentation enhances the reliability of object recognition algorithms used in systems for autonomous vehicles, f

How do the concepts of data fusion and pattern recognition contribute to information integration in computer vision?
Data fusion and pattern recognition are pivotal to information integration in computer vision. Data fusion combines data from multiple sensors, such as cameras and depth sensors, to provide a comprehensive view of a scene or object, enhancing accuracy and detail. Pattern recognition then utilizes features extracted from this data to identify and classify objects, comparing them against known patterns. This combined approach enables systems to generate more accurate visual information, which is crucial for applications requiring precise object recognition and decision-making, such as autonomous
