Confidence intervals for two sample means: Calculation, interpretation, and a few simple rules - PMC
Focusing on a simple but prevalent case of statistical inference, the comparison of two sample means, we describe possible CIs for between- and within-subjects designs. In addition, we give hands-on examples of how to compute these CIs and discuss their relation to classical t-tests. Keywords: confidence intervals, graphical data presentation, repeated measures, within-subjects designs, between-subjects designs

More on reddit.comCalculating the p value from confidence intervals
Do you need the exact p-value or just to know if it is statistically significant? If the latter, and if the confidence interval doesnโt overlap with the null value (e.g., zero), then it is statistically significant (ie p < 1-Coverage Rate). If you need the exact p-value, going from CI to p-value will depend on the parameter of interest and the way in which the CI was calculated. For a basic situation, you can reverse engineer things because you can (a) determine the degrees of freedom and therefore the critical value, (b) you have the margin of error from the study (Margin of Error = Critical Value * Standard Error). Therefore, you can get the standard error. Then, you have the observed parameter estimate (or it is the center of the confidence interval if not). With the estimate and the standard error, you can calculate the test statistic. And, then, get the p-value. But, this is the most simplistic scenario. For some CIs this will not work. 95% confidence interval for 2 groups' means OR 95% CI for difference in means?
Option 2. It's possible for confidence intervals to overlap but for there not to be a "statistically significant" difference in the means. However, if they don't overlap, that generally does mean that there is a statistically significant difference. See this Minitab blog . Edit: Though comparing to 0 isn't necessarily correct in all cases. If you reject Ho: mu1 - mu2 = 0, you can say that the two groups have different mean, but that might be a given already, and you may be interested in other values. More on reddit.com

February 24, 2016 - A confidence interval provides you with a set of limits in which you expect the difference between the population means to lie. The p-value and the confidence interval are related and have a consistent interpretation: if the p-value is less than ฮฑ then a (1-ฮฑ)*100% confidence interval will not contain zero. For example, if the p-value is less than 0.05 then a 95% confidence interval will not contain zero. If you wish to calculate a confidence interval, our confidence interval calculator will do the work for you.
