r/DesignMyRoom on Reddit: Console Table or Sideboard?
April 26, 2023 -
Hi All, Just looking for some advice. This is my entrance hall/porch, whatever it’s called. I would like to put something between the tall plant and the open doorway. Thinking a console table or a sideboard.
I’m just wondering if a console table would look lost against the tall back wall. And if a sideboard might look too bulky and not really fitting with the minimalist style? The attached pictures aren’t necessarily the exact units I would buy, just an example of the style.
Also, I included a picture of how it used to look. Just for fun!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Console, Sideboard, Server & Cabinet ... What's the Difference?
I’m shopping for dining room storage. What do I search for? The fact is, shops and manufacturers name their furniture whatever they think sounds best. If you want the best chance of finding a piece you love, use every term you can think of when searching online – I would go with “sideboard,” “buffet,” “server,” “credenza,” “cabinet” and “console” for good measure.

October 21, 2024 - Buffets are often slightly taller than sideboards and may have higher legs, making them more convenient for serving. Historically, buffets were used in Sweden for smorgasbords—large spreads of food and drink. This concept spread across Europe, and today, buffets remain popular in both traditional and modern dining rooms. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or just need extra storage, a buffet is a practical and stylish addition to your space. Console tables are the chameleons of the furniture world, fitting seamlessly into various spaces like entryways, living rooms, or hallways.

March 17, 2022 - I typically use the phrase credenza over sideboard but I would use both search terms if you’re looking for storage like this. Traditionally they either have short legs or no legs, with the cabinets close to the ground, but I think that’s a rule that has gone out the window! Also, who made these rules? Credenzas and sideboards can be used in living rooms, roomy entryways, home offices, and wide hallways.
