You have 4 options: Toyota/Lexus - ol reliable. I'd encourage you to look at lexus - getting a ~2008 Camry and a ~2008 Lexus ES is going to be about the same price, but the Lexus is going to be nicer. If you want something that looks kinda fun, grab a Toyota Solara, a two door camry. Comes in a convertible! Honda/Acura - This is where I would stay. A Honda Fit manual or an Acura TSX sportwagon are both fantastic cars that I wish I had. They'll both have the carrying capacity to move you in and out of dorms/apartments as you graduate high school. Or just get your standard Accord/Civic, you'll be fine. Mazda - sleeper brand that is nearly as reliable as the above two, but doesn't have the same "tax". Look up some of their lineup and if you like what you see, get it. If you want just a sports car, get the Miata, the best car ever created (According to this sub) Ford "Panther Platform" cars - a "platform" is the 60% of the car you don't see (how the axles work, the coolant system, the engine housing, etc.) From 1978-2011, ford made a bunch of cars on their "Panther" platform, and they've been proven to be super reliable. Picture like, old school cop cars. Crown Victoria's, Grand Marquis, Lincoln Continentals/Town Cars - you have like 15 cars across 20 years that should all be reliable, comfortable, and are now cheap. For any of these, find the car you want, then google "Toyota Camry (or whatever) years to avoid". You'll find a few years with worse issues, and don't buy those. When you've narrowed in on 1-5 makes/models you like, that's when you should really start looking - CarGurus, CarFax, Facebook Marketplace are all great spots. So are estate sales lol. Look up a "how to do a walkaround inspection" and "how to do a test drive" youtube video, show up with some questions, do your inspection, take it to a mechanic to get a "pre-purchase inspection", and buy your car!
