First part is making a list. The split function will divide a string based on a character. By default it uses a space. You could split on other things by coding .split(‘,’) for example to divide on commas. The for loop is looping over the list and changing each list item to int. it’s using the index “n” in the loop to pull out each list item in turn. I’d use a list comprehension for that part though as I think it’s more readable. numbers_int = [int(item) for item in numbers]

Hi Everyone,
I'm completely new to python and am completing the Python for Everybody specialisation on Coursera. I am trying to convert strings in a list to integers but my code isn't working. I did manage to get it done with list comprehension but was confused as to why this isn't working. My code is below:
x = ['1','2','3','4'] #create list of numbers as strings
for i in x:
i = int(i) #iterate through each entry in the list and convert it to int from str
print(x)The output I'm getting from this is still:
['1', '2', '3', '4']

for i in x: i = int(i) You change i, not the list. List comprehension is the best way to do this so stick with that.

Here is a safe variant that filters out invalid ints:

This other variant returns a list of nullable ints where null entries are inserted for invalid ints (i.e. it preserves the original list count):
