Is it good to disable cookies?
It’s good to disable cookies when you’re concerned about privacy and the possibility of security threats. To improve device performance, you may want to disable cookies for better results.
Should you allow all cookies?
You can allow all cookies, but we recommend declining third-party cookies. These cookies allow websites to gather your browsing data even when you’re not visiting that particular site. If you want to keep your personal information private, allowing all cookies is not advisable.
How do you stop a site from asking you to accept cookies?
You can stop a site from asking you to accept cookies by blocking cookies under your privacy settings. You can also use secure browsers, VPNs, or browser extensions to keep your internet activity more private.
This is now called "On-device site data" (which is why a search of settings for "Cookies" will not bring it up), most easily found by pasting chrome://settings/content/siteData into your URL bar.
You can also navigate from "Settings" via "Privacy and Security" to the "Site Settings" page. There, scroll down past "Recent Activity" and "Permissions" to the "Content" section, click on the "Additional content settings" at the end of that to expand the list, then scroll all the way to the bottom and click "On-device site data" to bring up the page with the URL above.
(Yes, this essentially requires you to go down in the cellar, with a flashlight, and look in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard." I have no idea where Google gets their UI designers. Probably the same place.)
In Chrome 120, there is a new way to reach the mini menu that the eye icon used to access.
- Click the "Tune" icon to the left of the address bar. It's a
○―over a―○. - Click "Cookies and site data"
- Click "Manage on-device site data"
This will bring up a new modal dialogue box containing the same information and options as the old eye icon mini-menu:
Went to change some Cookie settings on a new install today, and under "Privacy and Security", where it normally has the sub-setting "Cookies and other site data", there is now only a sub-setting "Third-party Cookies". This page has several items missing that were present on the original/previous settings page:
There is no longer a "Allow sites to save and read cookie data" option, and I cannot find this setting in any other page.
The "Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows" setting has also disappeared, and again, I cannot seem to find this setting elsewhere.
Am running version: 113.0.5672.127 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Have these settings moved somewhere else? Am I being blind?
Does anyone know why Google would reduce control over cookies when other browsers are increasing them? Time to finally make that switch to Firefox??
Edit: Have also tried searching for how to clear cookies on exit, and all help pages have not been updated with the changes at all (typical Google), so no idea how to get this functionality any more..
Update: I have another computer that has updated to the exact same version but still has "Cookies and other site data" in the way I remember it. So why have I got one computer with the same version of Chrome, but on one I have "Cookies and other site data" and on the other I have "Third-party cookies"? I have tried sigining into the browser and out of it and it makes no difference.
