i just bought the lightweight duvet from silk and snow and i’m so happy with it. it’s heavy enough that I feel a little bit of weight and fluffiness, but light enough that I can completely wrap myself without getting hot on a summer night. it’s also an animal-free alternative, so no loose feathers to worry about! r/Bedding on Reddit: Duvet Insert for HOT Sleeper
June 7, 2025 -

Hey everyone.

I recently bought a new duvet cover (cotton percale) and the lightest down comforter I could find. Despite keeping the room at 64 degrees at night, I'm still hot.

What material would you guys recommend for a hot sleeper like me? Cotton insert? Something else?

If you have any specific products in mind, all I want is a king-sized insert that has loops on the corners so I can tie the insert to the drawstrings that are built into the duvet cover.

Thanks you!

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who responded. I appreciate all the good suggestions. I ended up buying the Your Moon wool blanket. Checked all the boxes of what I was looking for: All natural materials, corner loops, lightweight will still having some heft, and very reasonably priced.

Used it last night for the for the first time and couldn't have been happoer. It was perfect.

Definitely recommend it for other hot sleepers.

Hi,

I am looking for the ideal duvet insert, which for me would mean both fluffy yet cool, as I sleep rather hot. I have tried several ones, but never found the one...any recommendation ? which kind of material should I look for ? I have tried the following :

- 100% Silk duvet (Ikea) : good temperature-wise, but it's very thin and doesn't have any of that fluffyness / volume which I like.

- 4-season duvet made out of 50% polyester microfibre, 25% duck down and 25% duck feathers : super fluffy and comfortable, unfortunately too hot, I end up waking up sweating...

- Cotton weighted blanket : tried it for a while, but didn't like it too much, it doesn't have the fluffy feeling and was also keeping me too hot.

I know I sound difficult. But is there perhaps anything else a solution I haven't considered yet ? Do they make fluffy silk duvets (I didn't find any) ? I assume that a 100% down/feather duvet is gonna be just as hot than the one I have ?

Thanks !

Someone gave me a beautiful and extremely fluffy down duvet before the winter began this year and I’ve become spoiled by its pillowy, cloud-like feeling. But as the days get warmer, it’s beginning to get uncomfortably hot at night. Is it possible to find a thick and fluffy summer duvet that will stay somewhat cool? I did some light research at the mall but all the cool duvets I found were disappointingly flat. If you have any tips for me, I’d appreciate them!

I’m getting a duvet for Christmas and I’m struggling with finding the best one for not a billion dollars. I want one that’s down, but cooling, and with a good medium weight to it. What’s a good brand that will last a good while and won’t break the bank?

Hi, I live a hot climate and can't figure out what duvet insert to buy. I would cap it at an absolute max of $300 and I'm looking at the cooling down alternatives offered by the brands listed in the header. Anybody tried any of them before? I already have sheets I love and I'm not a fan of down or bamboo.

This is my research so far. I have friends who are also wanting the same things, so I'm keeping track of everything to share out. Would LOVE any input y'all have. WANTS: cooling/moisture–wicking/breathable NOT down or bamboo Somewhat plush, not the ¼” thin options that most lightweight styles come in Preferably machine washable Durable/long lasting Ideally around $200, no more than $300 OPTIONS Sheets & Giggles: $150 Eucalyptus Comforter: Ethical/eco-friendly company, fluffier/thicker than typical lightweight options. Mix of Tencel and poly fill. Wrinkly and will need a duvet cover. Lots of great reviews, but also some concern about pilling/tearing with too much washing. Machine washable. Def considering for price and balance between thickness and breathability/moisture-wicking SIJO: $195 Eucalyptus “cooling”: 100% TENCEL™ lyocell fabric shell and 100% TENCEL™ lyocell fiber fill, made from a blend of sustainably farmed eucalyptus and other wood sources. Lightweight, but good year-round. Reviews noted it was a bit closer to midweight and in between thin and a more typical thick mattress. Seems like a good year-round option for our climate. CON: Dry cleaning preferred SAATVA: $275 All Year Down Alternative: plush and airy, more so than other non 100%poly options. Organic percale cotton outer with blend of 3D down alternative and sustainable lyocell fill. Hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, machine washable. Good reviews and well liked company West Elm $230 Cooling Down Alternative Duvet Insert: 100% performance Hydrocool poly fill w/organic cotton outer shell, washable. Pottery Barn’s Hydrocool doesn’t have as high of a percentage of the cooling poly, but costs more. This has the best price per amount of performance material so far. Only found one review and it was bad. Pottery Barn $249 Hydrocool® Moisture Wicking Down Alternative Duvet Insert: Filled with down-alternative Hydrocool® polyester blend, this duvet insert wicks away moisture while you sleep. Wrapped in smooth cotton, it’s a hypoallergenic option. Decent amount of reviews, but has less performance filling than the West Elm version even though it’s pricier and from the same umbrella company??????

I just got the sheets and giggles comforter a few days ago and it is WAY too hot for me. It's fluffy which I love, but in a really dense heavy way. I do live in Utah, it's summer and I sleep hot, next to my furnace of a boyfriend, but even if that weren't the case I wouldn't rate this thing as an all season comforter. It IS soft and attractive, I'm tempted to keep it around for winter, we'll see if it holds up in the wash though. So far it's made it through one cycle ok... Next up I had my eye on an Ikea duvet insert, but they're almost 10 inches smaller than the duvet cover that matches my sheets I was planning on ordering, so be careful if you go that route. (Part of the appeal of the sheets and giggles comforter was it has a finished enough look to not be in a cover). Ikea inserts do have great ratings, are rated to different heat levels, and look pretty fluffy, plus the price can't be beat. My next step was gonna be a Cariloha comforter, as a desperate measure. The $300 price tag is off-putting, but it does appear to meet my fluffy and light requirements. But I know you said no bamboo. I'm curious as to why?

Hi I know this may seem like a redundant post but I am looking for a duvet insert that keeps you cool. My boyfriend likes to sleep over a lot and he tends to run hot and it makes us more uncomfortable. We keep the room at 68 all year around.

I still want a fluffy duvet insert (doesn’t have to be insanely hotel like fluffy but medium fluffy / on the fluffier side. All the ones I have seen so far are thinner blankets or thin duvet inserts.

I was also wondering if I could insert cooling blankets (more affordable option) into my current duvet and under the insert I have now. Would that help cool down the bed? Any thoughts on this before I revert to buying a very expensive duvet insert?

Other good inserts I’ve seen are the Your Moon wool insert - is this thick enough? Or on the thinner side?

I have the duvet cover and I have the sheets, both high thread count real cotton that I spent a pretty penny on, but 4 years with them and I never want another set of bedding. I live in a hot climate, so I sleep with just my top sheet and duvet cover, no duvet insert. I love my bedding set up, I think it looks classy and fancy, it's soft to the touch but not fluffy so I'm not too hot when I sleep, and in winter I add a small fleece blanket as needed.

However, my girlfriend is planning to move in and she wants fluffy comforter style bedding. I have previously purchased 3 duvet inserts in the last ~6 years that were all "cooling" but I was always too hot in them and got rid of them. Prior to that I had a handful of comforters while growing up, but I lived in a cold climate back then.

If I purchase another duvet insert, I want it to be the last one I ever buy, so it needs to be of quality, but it also needs to basically not keep ANY heat, it's function is just to be fluffy. Most things of quality are also, reasonably, made to be warm, but I need the opposite.

First, I'm going crazy trying to search for comforters, because comforter and duvet insert are apparently interchangeable terms.

I'm looking for a comforter that has even a little bit of cooling properties to it. I sleep hot, but I like big fluffy comforters. I'm thinking maybe a lyocell or rayon/bamboo, but so many of them are duvet inserts despite appearing in searches for comforters. Does anyone have any advice?

Are the coma inducers cooling comforters worth it at all? I don't mind paying extra if it means getting what I want. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Alternatively: Should I just buy a summer weight comforter? I've seen some recommend temps of being 70-90, that should keep me cool if I want my temps to be 65ish right?

On a hunt for the fluffiest yet lightest/coolest duvet insert. I am open to anything so long as it’s hypoallergenic.

Currently I have the quince lightweight and I wake up very hot. I’ve looked at the ikea lightweight but the dimensions for the queen are really small at 86 by 86 when my duvet is 92 by 88. My gf has the pottery barn hydrocool (lightweight or all season I’m not sure) and it’s amazing. Problem is it’s expensive.

Anyone have any recommendations? I am willing to spend a good bit of money but I want to double check other options before balling out on the pottery barn for 250.

I need one for summer, my place will hover around 70-72 degrees, and I’ve been sweating in my old down comforter (I need the weight otherwise I’d just use a sheet and blanket, plus I splurged on a linen duvet cover that I’d like to use). I just tried a eucalyptus one that was supposed to be “cooling,” but it was also making me super hot. I’ve heard of wool and silk duvet inserts, but not sure if anyone has experience with those. I’d like to get something that will last for years, so cotton is a no-go since that bunches over time.

I recommend silk over wool, tbh. Wool is great at wicking away moisture, sure, but it is still an insulating material (as is down) and as such doesn't do too hot at cooling you down. So, if you want a pretty cooling material then silk will (imo) be your best bet. Summer weight is what you'll want (and you'll want the insert to be just a bit larger than the duvet cover---this is really important if you don't want it to shift around like crazy inside of the duvet cover), and luckily there are many silk insert brands that have less silk fill in them than others and most of them will do pretty well breathability-wise (consistency in silk inserts is pretty awesome across the board, so buying a cheap one won't be a bad thing). Brands that will do well that have summer weight (or have something comparable): IKEA (light warm), THXSilk, Mommesilk, Your Moon, LilySilk, and ElleSilk. Some will have more silk fill than others, and some will be bigger (dimension-wise) than others, so you need to make sure that the silk insert is the dimensions and fill-weight (in ounces) that you're looking for. I recommend any silk insert that's less than 40 ounces of silk fill for a King/Cali King size. Again, it's important to get a duvet insert that's larger than the duvet cover (this is crucial!) especially since the summer weight is pretty lightweight and has a tendency to slide around (even tied into the duvet cover) so the extra inch or two of size the insert has inside of the duvet cover helps to 'pin' the insert in place really well. But, in regards to what will actually keep you cool during summer temps about the only fill materials that work well is silk or bamboo/eucalyptus and I tend to avoid the latter because the same thing happened to me (bought a bamboo set of sheets that claimed they were cooling and it was the opposite) so I tend to avoid it like the plague. And I have actual experience with a silk insert: it's game-changing (more than my linen canvas duvet cover that I absolutely adore to pieces). I have no doubt that within a few days others on here will pop up to agree that silk is a good option, but I thought I'd chime in early to let you know that it's an amazing option that will definitely help you out :)

Reddit, please help. I’m on the hunt for something that at this point may not exist: a duvet insert that is lightweight but big & fluffy without retaining heat, and quiet, no crinkley sounds when moving around. Fluff is a big factor, so I’m not looking for flatter inserts though they will inevitably be cooler.

I recently tried the Buffy Cloud Comforter, and I love how puffy & fluffy it is, but it is unbelievably hot. I wouldn’t consider myself a hot sleeper, before Buffy I slept with a weighted blanket and two quilts and still sometimes needed an extra blanket, so this thing must be really trapping the heat. It’s currently winter but I live in Texas, so ideally I could find something I can use for warmer nights as well. Otherwise my bedding is linen and not heat-trapping.

Any recommendations? Thank you!

I am redoing our bedding. We’ve had a paper thin duvet insert for years and it works okay but doesn’t give us the kind of plush, lofty feel. We are also hot sleepers but still want warmth throughout the year.

I’ve done a ton of research lately on the difference between down vs down alternatives, types of sheets for hot sleepers, etc. I’ve learned silk inserts are the best but that’s out of my price range atm (saving for a wedding)!

I ended up purchasing a king Nestwell Down Comforter in Medium Warm from Marshall’s with a queen Threshold (50% cotton/50% recycled polyester) duvet cover. But after night 1 = HOT LOL. Is it the insert or is it duvet cover? Do we need cooling sheets? I ran back to Marshalls and bought:

Martha Steward Jacquard Cotton Tencel Lyocell Comforter

Nestwell Down Alternative Lightweight Comforter

UGG 100% Tencel Lyocell sheet set

Thanks for the help!!!
