It was a Friday three years ago when I first fell in love with crystal growing, and indeed, with chemistry. That day, my high school Chemistry teacher asked us to make copper sulfate via an acid base reaction, and leave the solution to dry to obtain crystals. I thought the *crystals* were going to look like powdery grains of sand. Imagine my surprise when she showed us the large, sparkling crystals we had grown the next Monday. Over the course of the next few years, I would learn more about the art of growing crystals with chemistry, and the more I discovered, the more fascinating it became. For instance, you can control the shape of the crystals by adding impurities, crystallize insects with it, and by mixing with the right compounds, create an entirely different crystal altogether. However, interesting though this hobby was, I also realized that there was a lack of information regarding it online. There were certainly articles on how to grow copper sulfate crystals, but they were generic and lacked detailed information. There were no suggestions on what to watch out for, the dangers, and the common errors. After experimenting for 3 years, I decided to write a detailed guide and pictures of my own crystals to guide people who are as interested in it as I am, and hopefully to get more people to love chemistry too. I first started growing crystals in high school 6 years ago. My teacher asked us to crystallize copper sulfate as part of a lab experiment. I thought the crystals would look like table salt, just blue in color. But when I came back the next Monday, I saw real sparkling crystals in the dish! Since then, I've fallen in love with crystal growing, and I've grown crystals from table salt, fertilizer, limestone and even iron rust. But it feels good to come back and revisit the chemical that started it in the first place. Good old copper sulfate. This particular crystal took 2 months to grow. I was shocked when she showed us the large, sparkling crystals we had grown the next Monday.

Ever since then, I've grown many other types of crystals, from ordinary table salt to exotic black crystals using household materials. But copper sulfate is what started it all, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
