September 21, 2024Are there amateur cyclists who use the core body temperature sensor for training? I’m not sure how to interpret the data to gain any insight
I would probably put this in the bucket of "Really new and un-tested" tech. Not saying it is inaccurate (That is a different discussion), just that the metric doesn't seem to be thoroughly researched yet. It could be useful, but I suspect would need to be combined with a bunch of other data to get anything useful. Here is a question: What was your fueling cadence like? As I look at this it feels like your body temp rose and peaked along the "Everyone has about 1.5 hours of hard riding in them" before you need to start fueling. Are the upticks correlated with eating things? Might also be interesting to plot HR vs. CORE vs. Power to see if you can track decoupling. More on reddit.com

I’ve seriously considered buying a Core body temperature sensor. Heat stress should be moderated, because it significantly impacts performance. The price of €300 is higher than most other sensors (heart rate and some single pedal power meters), but it’s certainly not unaffordable compared with the rest of the kit. Those of you who bought a core temperature sensor, was it worth it? If you dont want to use it for heat training specifically, is it useful for general training as well? Like can you wait till your body body has cooled down again between efforts and improve training quality that way or stuff like that? Especially on the trainer where heat is generally an issue.
Also the only company I know of that makes a sensor is greenTEG and it costs 280€. Thats a hell of a lot for a freakin thermometer with a bluetooth/ANT+ function. Hopefully some asian company realizes that they can make a bit of money and comes up with a cheaper option to sell on aliexpress.

no. it's super slow to respond. you'd be waiting 15-20 minutes for a drop. might as well just go off hr. also, no, it's not worth it and no, it's not even really that useful for heat training (i.e., at the beginning of the summer it absolutely sucks, and by August you've acclimated a bit and it still sucks but is more manageable). the core sensor doesn't tell you anything more than what you already know. and the sensor itself has a very flimsy clip that almost assuredly will break, probably a fe wdays after the warranty. and the clip is the actual sensor, so there's no replacing it. the only recourse is a paltry discount on another very expensive sensor.
