June 15, 2022 - The Corelle dishes are so lightweight and look exactly like they did when I got them six years ago. They've been fantastic for my young daughter as I don't (usually) worry about them breaking and they're a great size for her. Can't recommend them enough! My grandma still has hers from the 70s I'm pretty sure! ... I have a 15 year old set, with the "scalloped" edging on the plates and bowls.

I saw someone giving away some Shadow Iris serving pieces/vase/matching Corning ware. Added bonus is I think you can mix winter frost with the shadow iris as they are both white. FWIW I love my Corelle but I also have a set of actual “expensive” China, like if I were to buy it online it would be over $3k but I spent $120 for 12 place settings and bought it from a young woman who had inherited it from Grandma. My glasses and desert ware are Arcoroc pink glass and match both my Corelle winter frost and my ivory Lenox. I do not use holiday disposable plates ever, even birthdays and such I use something substantial. Corelle is maybe BIFL but it doesn’t stay fancy; I mean I will likely use it forever but eventually scratches are visible and it’s nice to have something that looks a bit more polished for gatherings and special occasions. I know I might have misspelled it but I dont care. I’ve seen so many people here say they are the best dishes but I don’t really get what the hype is behind them. How are they any different from another plate made of the same material, I have a friend who bought the set in his house from the dollar store, he bought a set for 8 people for 35$, been using them for 3 and a half years now. Seriously what’s so special about them, I’ve bought a set during president day and I don’t see what it’s all about, it was just a bit more expensive then my friend’s set so I’m going to keep them but they are just the same as everything else

I worked for Corelle for several years, and I'll tell you a few things about them. First, there are no "other plates made of the same material." There is only one factory in the whole world that makes Corelle, and it's in Corning, NY. The manufacturing process fuses 3 layers of glass into a single laminated piece that is pressed while still molten into various ware shapes, and then the edges are fire polished to create a smooth edge and create an encapsulation of the core glass. The "green" ware is then annealed slowly in a long oven to remove internal stresses. As the glass cools, the surface contracts at a different rate than the core glass, creating massive tension in the surface within the piece. This is called tempering, which makes it incredibly strong and is the same technique used to make bullet-proof glass and car windshields. It's also why there are many millions of pieces still in daily use that were made decades ago. Patterned sets with colorful decoration are created by printing with an ink made of powdered glass frit suspended in a wax carrier, which is then fired in a kiln to fuse it to the glass surface, making the artwork incredibly durable so that it can withstand decades of daily dishwasher use. In addition to lasting a very long time, Corelle is also safer to use. If your loved one were to trip with a plate of food in hand and fall on it, the glass shatters into small pieces instead of dangerous shards. They might receive a few small cuts, but there is no risk of severing a major blood vessel. In fact, when a Corelle dish finally breaks, they don't consider it a failure, but rather, it served its purpose and failed successfully. Other benefits are that it is very lightweight, safe for use in the oven, microwave, and freezer, and it stacks efficiently, taking up very little space in your cabinets. Another fun fact, the massive glass melting tanks are electrically powered, using long electrodes to pass a large current through the molten glass. Over time, the high temperature and abrasive nature of the continuous melting process erodes the refractory bricks that line the tanks, requiring periodic tank rebuilds that cost many millions of dollars in materials, labor, and down time. The Corelle pressware plant employs union labor, providing hundreds of good paying jobs for US workers.
