r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Thoughts on cork flooring in a kitchen?
October 30, 2015 -

Hi everyone!

I'm in the early stages of planning a fairly significant home renovation. So far, I know I want dark hardwood running through most of the top floor (split level house--we've got a large living/dining area, 3 bedrooms, and a bathroom on the top floor). I don't want to run hardwood through the kitchen, but I do want it to match the rest of the floor to help give the kitchen an airier feeling, as it's a pretty small space.

I'm not a fan of most tile, so I'm thinking of installing cork tiles that are similar in tone to the hardwood. The kitchen doesn't get a ton of natural light, so I'm not too worried about fading, and I'm aware that it will need to be sealed. Has anyone installed cork in their kitchen, or have any insight on that idea? I'd appreciate any thoughts.

After tons of debating, we went with cork flooring in the kitchen. A month in and we are in love!
Hi OP, I would love an update on how the floor is holding up. I see a lot of complaints about cork flooring, but understand brands vary greatly. More on reddit.com

Thoughts on cork flooring in a kitchen?
I had gorgeous cork floors in my kitchen. After just a couple of years, though, they started showing wear at the joints. I don't know why, but eventually you could delineate each tile, one from the next. We wound up pulling them out after maybe seven or eight years and installing ceramic tile. While the cork was down, though, we loved it. It was warm underfoot, sufficiently resilient that a knife that fell blade down "healed" itself and didn't show a mark, and dishes typically didn't shatter when they hit the floor. Sadly, it looked like crap after just a few years. More on reddit.com

Even though kitchens are potentially wetter areas, we like floating cork in the kitchen because it often provides more cushioning than solid, glue-down cork. This is most likely due to the difference in thickness between the two products as well as the additional layers inherent in the construction of engineered flooring.

September 29, 2002 - What is the thickness of cork used in a kitchen? We have linoleum that would come up first. I don't want a "step up". Can the thinner cork handle wear? ... The stuff I used was a laminate (like Pergo). About 7 inch wide by about 36" long tongue and groove pieces - about 3/8" thick + about 1/8 cork sheet underlayment for a total of about 1/2" above sub floor - worked out to be about the same height as the carpet in my living room that it butts up against.
