In Europe it is a Greek-originated name that exists everywhere in different forms.
the original meaning is "ordered". It was the adjective used for the world, Uranos. Kosmos uranos. So it is quite elegant and sublime. A famous Prince, Cosimo d Medici used it too and no one laughed at it then.

It is weird for an American. Tell me that you wouldn't make fun of a kid in your class that was named something like Cosmo. And the fact that he did hide it, which shows he is embarrassed by it, makes it all the more fodder for poking fun at him over it. Sure, in Greece it might be a common name, but in America, he might as well have been named Moonbeam or Starshine.
