Fiber cement @ 3x the cost to vinyl seems in the ballpark. Hard to say precisely without more details. Vinyl is one of the cheapest possible options and fiber cement is one of the most expensive possible options. You have steel, wood, and aluminum options in-between, with outliers here and there depending on location and precise product. Answer from spezizabitch on reddit.com

r/Homebuilding on Reddit: Hardie Board vs. Vinyl
March 11, 2021 -

So, I’m building a home and have hit a snag. My contractor has informed me that we will not finish on time due to siding availability. He has 3 different options to choose from and I’m at an impasse. Vinyl siding (wrong color) at $0 increase, Hardie board facing with lap siding on sides and back of house at a $2500 increase (paint included), or Hardie board all around at $6500 increase (paint included). Which option would be the best or what are the pros and cons? This is our first home and I don’t want to choose wrong.

r/Homebuilding on Reddit: Upgrade cost for vinyl to hardie for new build?
October 26, 2025 -

Hoping to get a gut check on the upgrade cost for vinyl (included) to hardie for my new build.

My build has approx 40-42 squares of exterior surface to cover. The home is pretty tall... approx 38ft tall to the ridge and has some minor complexity in the front with dormers.

I received a quote from the builder for +$50k to upgrade from vinyl to board and batten pre-finished hardie siding.

I am not too familiar with costs... so I am rough estimating the vinyl job is approx $25k ($600 per square, but is this accurate?) which would mean the total cost of the hardie job is approx $75k or ~$1800 per square.

Does this seem about right for the difference between the vinyl (included) and hardie cost?

That also means you may be trying to align product and installer, so you aren’t getting a someone who grudgingly tried to install Hardie board , does a crappy job and installer saying, see, this is why I don’t like Hardie. So in some communities there would not be good competition from which to select and that effectively limits your options. If you get one of the factory painted ( Or however they do it) colors then there’s no initial painting cost of course. Supposedly the finish lasts something like 10-20 years- I’d have to re-check that. You wouldn’t want to use the painting advice from a vinyl salesman since vinyl , “ never needs painting “is their baby.
