First time ever at COSTCO - membership question
There is an income requirement. You need $70 to buy a one year membership. You also need about $100 for your first shop to buy groceries, and when you pay you will realize you ended up spending $490 by accident. More on reddit.com

Why nearly half of Costco members upgrade to Executive - TheStreet
1 hour ago - Because you get 2%, you’ll need to spend $3,250 to receive $65 in cash back. At that point, your effective annual membership rate is back down to $65,” CNBC reported. The math is pretty simple, and Costco’s membership page (membership required) even offers a calculator so you can keep track.

Membership Clerk here. -Not sure which membership you started with, Gold Star or Executive; but ALWAYS start with the executive, you probably spend more than you realize and you will be getting cash back plus if you get the Costco mastercard and the executive membership at the same time you get better deals, pretty sure right now you get $60 statement credit. If you buy the executive and months later you go to the Membership counter and ask how much you’ve spend so far, they will tell you, and you can also ask them if they think is enough to make it worth it, if their answer is not convincing enough, downgrade and ask for a refund, they’ll give it to you, you will get the full cost of the difference between the memberships. -Pay attention to the items that go on sale, if you bought something and it goes in sale within 30 days, go to the Refunds counter and they’ll give you a refund, I suggest taking a picture of the sign of the item, the cashier will thank you and it makes the process faster. Even if you’re out of the 30 day window, if you’re nice the cashier might help you, especially if you’re an Exec member. -Buy tires at Costco, might be more expensive at first, but is usually worth it, and you get warranty. -If you bought something and is bad/moldy/rotten, BRING IT BACK, we need to know, costco really cares about the quality of the products they sell, so when you bring a product that went bad when it wasn’t supposed to, we send the report to the vendors so if there’s something wrong with it we can do something about it. If you can go to return it right away, freeze it and bring it back next time you’re in.

r/CostcoCanada on Reddit: Thinking of Getting a Costco Membership – Is It Worth It?
June 4, 2025 -

Hey everyone, I’m considering getting a Costco membership and could really use some advice from those who shop there regularly.

For the past 1–2 years, I’ve been ordering groceries via the DoorDash app — usually non-perishables from No Frills and fruits/veggies/dairy from Loblaws. It’s been convenient, but I’m wondering if Costco could help save money in the long run.

I don’t own a car, but I do rent a Communauto once or twice a month, so I could plan bigger grocery runs when I have access to a vehicle.

A few details:

  • Family of 2

  • Currently spending around $500/month on groceries

  • Open to doing 1–2 big Costco hauls a month instead of frequent small DoorDash orders

Questions:

  • Is Costco membership worth it in this situation?

  • Are the savings significant compared to No Frills/Loblaws?

  • How’s the quality of produce, dairy, etc.?

  • Has anyone else made a similar switch — from grocery delivery to Costco?

  • Any first-time membership deals or promos I should know about?

Would love to hear your experiences — thanks in advance!

I live in DT, Toronto.

Edit- Just grabbed the Executive Card through Groupon! Big thanks to everyone for the tips—couldn’t have navigated the discount jungle without you! 😊
