Hi all, I have had the Keith Urban Yamaha Guitar, the one that sells for costco for $99 for a few months now.

I am a beginner and that's my first guitar. Now that I know how to play chords, I feel I am blocked to make progress. The key problems I face is that the guitar has high action and hurts my fingers to practice bar chords and some complex stuff. The truss rod is all the way tightened. I tried other guitars and I feel more comfortable on them.

 Please suggest me an upgrade around 200-300$ so that I can really learn how to play and keep making progress.

Some options that I am looking at right now are

I would suggest that you strongly consider a used guitar. The reason is that you get more guitar for your money. The used market right now is so saturated that any used guitar selling for $250 was likely selling for at the very least $400. And that used guitar stands a good chance of sounding better than a new guitar at $250. Plus, it's already depreciated, so if you end up deciding guitar isn't for you, you'll make back a lot more of your money - maybe even turn a profit. I'd also suggest you shop at a local indie store. The owners will be able to point you at diamonds in the rough or overlooked treasures. And they're also quite likely to cut a deal with you by offering a free setup or lessons at a discount. Plus, it's just good karma to support local shops. Lastly, don't get hung up on one or two models. Try out different brands, styles, and sizes to really figure out which one calls to you. I know you've got a couple selling at costco in mind, but getting to a music store will offer you a lot more choice and flexibility. Just my two pesos.

Did you ever have the guitar professionally set up? That's cheaper than a new guitar and will get you a lot further with playability. You could set it up yourself pretty easy too with the help of YouTube. A potential new guitar would need to be set up the same, anyway. More expensive guitars are not necessarily more playable out of the box.

Is this a good buy? Son wants to play guitar next high school semester.

Cort is a pretty well known South Korean manufacturer - they provide white label manufacturing for a ton of brands. They do Fender's acoustics, Ibanez, some of Alvarez, etc. Based on the specs and materials it should be decent, certainly playable.
