Countries North and South of the equator
Countries that lie along the Equator
Countries further from the equator tend to be more developed? Is this just a coincidence?
There are only 33 countries entirely in the Southern Hemisphere [6300x2681][OC]

With some obvious acceptions such as Singapore and maybe parts of Russia, and probably ignorance on my part, I feel like countries closer to the equator tend to be less developed than those further from the equator.
For example, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, the southern most countries in South America rank higher in development than those closer to the equator. In the same way Canadaa and the US would be considered more developed than Mexico and the Central American countries.
The same argument could be made for Australia and New Zealand in Oceania and Japan/ China in Asia, and even South Africa compared tours northern neighbors.
Is this just a coincidence or are there factors at play. For instance I can imagine colonizers (Europeans) were better at building countries/cities when the climate was similar to their own. I can also see factors such as monsoons hindering development.
Interested to see your thoughts. Please feel free to tell me how wrong I am, I am probably due for a reminder of my global ignorance.
