r/pchelp on Reddit: HELP my CPU fans are running at full speed even though my cpu is not hot
March 16, 2024 -

I'm literally so desperate. As soon as i start my PC, the CPU fans are freaking out. Core temp and bios say cpu temp is about 30°C and i have set the "silent" fan profile. But for someone me reason both my cpu fans sre running at 2000+ RPM. I have reset the bios already and i have no idea now what could be happening. And my pc is so LOUD. I built it myself only a few months ago and it's been fine until now, this just started yesterday. CPU is an i5 13600k, asus rog strix B-760-F mobo.... (the other cha fans are controlled seperately in case you were wondering. There are like 6 of them)

I bought a prebuilt PC from scorptec: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/ready-to-run-pcs/gaming-pc/75791-ss-ryzen2060 and the fans are always running at full speed (all 5 including the cpu fan) I don't think i'm able to adjust them to what speed i want them to run. Anyways, will these fans spinning max speed for like 12 hours a day be a issue in the long run? (1-5 years) Will they last at least 5 years at this rate?

Guys, i had recently gotten my PC fixed by some dude who was just trying to figure stuff out until the PC booted. The PC ended up booting and since then, the fan has always been on full speed no matter the load. He changed the position of some pins but i don't remember which ones. What pins/stuff should i look for to make the fan speed back to normal?

September 21, 2023 -

Hi !

I recently bought a new PC that runs on watercooling as well as fans. Problem being that it makes a lot of noise even when resting.

This seems to come from the motherboard fan named "CPU FAN" in the bios, which operates at 100% of its capacity or in any case much too quickly (2400RPM) compared to the actual temperature of the processor (around 40°C) . I delayed triggering fans based on temperature in the bios, this had no visible effect. Likewise limiting the maximum operation of the CPU FAN to 50% of its maximum capacity, still has no effect.

The SpeedFan software simply cannot detect the fan in question.

Could the problem come from a bad physical connection of the fans? An outdated driver? Have you ever had a similar problem and how was it resolved?

Thank you for taking the time to read me and for your possible answers!

When I first booted my PC this morning, I noticed that the CPU fan started running at full speed from the moment I turned it on. Since then, I have:

  • Cleaned the PC, including the CPU fan

  • Performed a soft BIOS reset

  • Updated BIOS to the latest version (2104)

The CPU fan has been acting up the last few weeks, but the opposite of what it did today. BIOS did not allow Windows to be booted, because the fan was spinning below the threshold set in BIOS, which was 200 RPM. I sort of solved this by postponing the 'post delay time' as it is called in my BIOS from 3 to 7 seconds. However, it would still act up every now and then.

Specs:

  • Intel 3570K

  • Scythe Mugen 2 Rev B

  • Asus P8Z77-V

  • G.skill Ripjaws 8GB

  • Asus GTX 660Ti DC-II OC

  • Samsung 830 128GB (for OS)

  • Windows 7 64-bit Professional (6.1 build 7601)

Any ideas how to fix this CPU fan issue would be greatly appreciated.

October 23, 2022 - Just don't. It's regulated for a reason. If you really want to do this, adjust the fan curve instead and you can run at full speed when under load. There is also no reason to do this at all. It has 0 benefits. Your CPU was designed to run with a stock fan curve.

My PC has had an issue where the CPU fan runs at full speed, during POST my case fans run at full speed aswell but they return to normal speed as soon as POST is done. Things I've tried so far and didn't work: Enabling CPU fan control in BIOS, enabling System fan control in BIOS, using SpeedFan to control the fans but everytime I change the PWM it just returns to max speed. I feel as if it's the sensor as BIOS reports ''Processor thermal margin 31- C'' but in Windows it shows the temperature without the "-".

My motherboard is a Intel D975XBX2 with a Q6600 CPU (yes ik it's old)

I don't like the fact that my Ryzen 5 2600X reaches 61°C before the CPU FAN (using the stock Wraith Spire cooler) kicks in at almost its max speed until the CPU reaches 40°C and then rises to 61°C and drops to 40°C again. By setting the CPU FAN to Full Speed the temperature stops raising and remains around 47°C even after 90 minutes of gaming.

My Vega 56 Strix behaves similarly, temperatures raise until 71°C because the fans only work at 60% of their speed and only spin at 100% when reaching above 80°C then back to 71°C and so on. If I set my fans to kick in at 100% when reaching 60°C my temperature only raises until 65°C even after 90 minutes of gaming.

Noise doesn't bother me in any way, this is all about temperatures, performance and durability. I would like my PC to last a couple of years. I did notice that with lower temperatures the clocks stay more stable over the time at higher frequencies!

These are my concerns:

  • Could the fans wear out or take some damage by spinning at full speed every time while gaming?

  • Does having 65°C instead of 79°C impact on the lifespan of the Graphics Card even if the claimed safe temperature is 95°C?

  • If my CPU stock cooler breaks, I can just replace it with a new cooler. What about the GPU?

P.S. the temperatures claimed above are an approximate average to what I saw while gaming so don't take the temperatures number by number and of course they depends from game to game. It just gives the idea! Xpost to r/buildapc

So my Lenovo Legion 5 pro (16ACH6H) for the last year seemingly out of nowhere goes full speed on the CPU fan, I can be doing only web browsing and suddenly, according to the legion fan control, the fan is 5500rpm. On average this happens once a month but lasts for anywhere between 1 to 5 hours. Even continues the next day after booting up. CPU temp is in the 40s and not in some heavy use. Even does it when I'm looking at a desktop after restarting the system.

I've tried:

reverting to old bios (i currently have gkcn44)

removing every bit of dust from the fan system

updating windows

downloading Legion fan control and lowering fan speed

switching power modes

multiple restarting

lowering maximum processor state in windows power plan

running eset antivirus

resetting capacitors

EDIT: if that helps i have my integrated graphics card turned of so im running only on the rtx 3070

EDIT_2: turned off pc for the night, came to it next morning all cooled down and as soon as i hit the power button the fan kicks in

Is there anything more i can do?

r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: Is There Any Harm In Running My PC Fans At 100% Power All The Time
August 26, 2021 -

So as the title asks, is there any harm in doing so?

I honestly have no idea what is going on with my PC. Ever since I got my PC, at least afterburner tells me the idle GPU temperature is at ~50 C.

Which to me is worrying, but if I keep my fans at full speed or nearly full speed it only reaches 65 C as a max. Like when I'm gaming or such.

So with that I'm worried there are harms I am not aware of to keeping them fully on as long as my pc is on.

Other than the sound of a jet engine in the background.

Also I've cleaned out my pc, rearranged parts, relocated the pc itself to multiple places. It helped to lower it by ~4 C degrees, but not much else.

Thank you!

Edit: after being pointed out my clumiseness I wrote 55C max I meant 65C

CPU Fan Always Running Full Speed - Republic of Gamers Forum - 891757
March 6, 2024 - Fans will typically spin in the wrong mode, but speed control is likely to have a problem. When you have multiple PWM fans on a single header; the 12V, 0V, and PWM signals are common across all of the fans, but the tachometer signal only comes from one fan. You could try changing the order they connect to the splitter, to see if that changes anything. Also, try the fans individually, with just one fan connected at a time (if using a 4 pin splitter, make sure it's to the connector with all 4 pins wired), in case the problem is inside one of the fan motors (e.g.

r/buildapc on Reddit: Fans running at highest speed even at Low temps. Changing it to smart fan mode resulted in CPU FAN ERROR when gaming. Please help!
December 10, 2021 -

Hi guys,

I have recently just gotten someone to build me a PC.

Specs are :

MB : MSI B560 Bazooka Intel i7 11700K Gigabyte Aorus elite RTX 3060TI 32 gb ram XFLOW AIO water cooling

I have encountered this issue that my builder dosent know why, neither do i know how to fix. So I have a total of 3x front RGB fans, 1x back RGB fan and 2x RGB fans from XFLOW water cooler. All my fans are running at very high speeds even when the temp is Low like 30 to 40 over degrees celcius. (Gets pretty loud) then my AIO fans/pump is making this like buzzing sound when it’s running at such high speed.

I have tried turning it down but enabling smart fan mode for CPU, pump and system on bios. It was perfectly quiet for a moment till I started my first game in Valorant, screen hanged and show CPU FAN ERROR. Had to go back and reset settings to default on bios and now the sound is just incredibly loud again.

Also, on my bios RPM is 0 for all fans, even when running at such high speeds.

Can anyone please advise? What should I do? As I’m an complete amatuer at building pcs and I have tried reading all possible solutions online already.

Thank you!

r/buildapc on Reddit: Fans running at full speed at all times after reboot?
July 29, 2023 -

As per the title, yesterday after reboot 4 of my 6 fans suddenly run at full speed all the time. Even after sleep/wake up/reboot it will do the same thing again. Only when shutdown and boot up it will act normally as per bios fan set up, and after rebooting the same issue resurfaces. The remaining 2 fans running at bios manual fan setup with no issues whatsoever.

The only setting I fiddled was turning off Hardware Accelerated Graphics Scheduling and turning back on again. Turning off/on requires rebooting for this setting to take into effect.

Tried plugging out and in again for the 4 affected fan headers, the problem persist. However, when using the Fan Control REM0o, the 4 affected fans could be controlled by the program and rpm went down. Once I turn off the control, the fans immediately ramped up rpm to max again.

Operating System: Windows 11

6) System 4 - Lian Li Lancool 216 Fan Hub (2 x 160mm Intake, 1 x 140mm Exhaust, 1 x 120mm Arctic P12 PWM PST)

Appreciate any advise on the above.

On a side note, my ram suddenly detected only 1 out of 2 sticks this morning when doing reboots, I cleaned/reseated the ram sticks and it works again. Hope its an one off issue.
