Try turning on the CPU fan smoothing option in your BIOs. I've had a similar problem with a Ryzen 1700 & 2700X. Ryzen boosts, has a voltage spike, results in a temperature spike and the fans ramp up to compensate. In my case it was most noticeable at idle where light tasks (like a web browser) would make the fans ramp up for a second, which is more annoying than a consistent drone. By adjusting the CPU fan smoothing you can made the fans less 'bursty' when responding to CPU temperature spikes. You could also make your fan curve less aggressive. Alternatively you could try overclocking which disables the boost and locks at a clock speed. This thread has a bit of discussion about it. Answer from Megabyte2 on reddit.com

r/buildapc on Reddit: PC Fans Speeding up and Slowing back down?
July 26, 2018 -

Hey guys, I built my PC last November and it's ran well since then but within the past few days I've noticed something that I think is a bit odd.

I bought The Witcher 3 to play when my friends aren't on or when I just want to play a good single player game. While playing, I noticed that my PC fans were speeding up and slowing down what I considered to be pretty randomly. I figured it was since I had a lot of the graphics turned up pretty high so I turned some of them down but the fans still seemed to be fluctuating in rpm's. I then noticed they were doing similar fluctuations while I was playing CS:GO, where I have all but one or two settings turned down as low as possible.

I have an NZXT kraken AIO so I checked the connections plugging in the pump to make sure they weren't loose or anything. I guess that really only leaves my GPU fans and case fans but I'm not sure what I need to do next if there is anything wrong in the first place.

My build is as follows:

Case: NZT S340 elite

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600

GPU: Asus Dual Series 1070

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62

Case Fans: stock NZXT for exhaust and stock kraken fans for intake

Edit: I usually play with headphones on so this may have started earlier but when i was playing The Witcher using my speakers is when I first noticed the fans doing this. I also had my headphones off when I was playing CS:GO and noticed it.

CPU fan speeds up for no reason, then slows down again | Tom's Hardware Forum
November 23, 2017 - As always check for a BIOS update and besure you have an adequate CPU fan as well as adequate fans for the case. It could be just compensating for surrounding air temperature if their is not adequate case cooling. Remember all of the other components generate heat as well.

CPU fan won't slow down but does speed up - Republic of Gamers Forum - 715785
This is despite the fact that the temps on the CPU are all hovering around 30C and according to HWMonitor the fans are at around 560 rpm even though clearly going at full tilt. PC fans randomly speeds up and slows down every 3-4 minutes or so.
This happens with computers. Even when you're not at your pc it is running processes which will usually spike the voltage and in turn the temperature. There's usually a setting in your fan control software called hysteresis or temperature hysteresis which can compensate with how quickly your fans will react to temperature changes. This is usually measured in two settings for temperature and time, meaning you set how long the temperature difference change has to exist before the fans react to it. This will allow for short spikes in voltage to return to normal temperature before having your fans increase. More on reddit.com

Hi smileyboy,

The fans usually increase in speed (assuming you have a fan temperature control chip) when the inside of the PC case hits a certain temperature. Once the heat has been dispated then the fan speed will reduce again. That is what normally happens. If the fan speed is up and down without any specific reason then it could be the temperature chip causing the problem or the fan may be faulty; either way a repair technician would need to look at it.

Before you do that, though, try opening the case. I assume we are talking about a desktop PC? If it is a laptop then take it to a repair shop, accessing the fan in a laptop is rather tricky if you don't know what you are doing. As i've said, if it is a desktop, remove the side panel (initially with the machine switched off - remove the plug from the power supply and rmemeber to earth yourself before touching anything inside.) Now look at the fan(s). Is there a build up of dust/grime on the fan blades? If so gently brush the dust of with a small, clean artist brush. Check the heat sink also on the CPU. If dust has accumulated in the heat sink finials then blow it out with a can of clean air. Try running the machine with the cover off to see if the extra air flow cures the problem. Your PC may be overheating causing the fan(s) to speed up to cool thing down. Listen to the fans to see if you can isolate which fan is causing the problem. You will have one fan on top of the CPU (porcessor); you may also have an extractor fan on the back of the case. Another fan is located in the PSU (power supply unit). PSU fans, however, need to be looked at by a qualified technician.

I'm glad you found the instructions useful, LitzPlBoy! It is amazing how much dust actually accumulates on these fans overtime.

January 8, 2019 - Antec 1200 with 12 fans P/P and your scared of overclocking :O Most motherboards allow you to disable that Q fan control so that the fan is running full bore constant in my experience fans tend to last longer when run at full or a set % rather than the up and down constant which is hard on the fan. There are plenty of 3rd party aftermarket type fans that will work well to cool that cpu Deepcool Gammaxx 200 to 400 as example, ~$30 and the cooler does better than stock Ryzen coolers (any of them) I had to LMAO about that casting the demons to hell person ^.^

CPU Fan Speeds Up And Slows Down
February 14, 2024 - When the CPU fan speeds up and slows down, it usually indicates that the system is managing its temperature. The fan speeds up to cool down the CPU when it gets too hot and slows down when the temperature decreases.

CPU fan won't slow down but does speed up - Republic of Gamers Forum - 715785
March 7, 2024 - Basically, on booting up, my CPU fan is at low RPM as expected as the CPU is not being taxed. If I tax the CPU a little the RPM increases and the decreases as the load lightens on the CPU. However, if I start a game or anything that may make the CPU work fairly hard the RPM on the fan goes high but once the load is gone on the CPU the fan doesnt slow back down again.

CPU fan keeps wavering - what's causing it? | Ars OpenForum
June 18, 2012 - I had the same problem with my wife's system, the Operating temp setting was just right where it would hit the temp (45c), spin up the fan, cool down quick (41c), slow the fan down, warm up (45c), rinse, repeat. You can try setting the goal temp in the BIOS either higher (thus running slower more often) or lower (running at a higher speed because it just can't Quite reach goal temp). Either way should solve your problem. ... Yup. I just checked the BIOS and there was an option to enable/disable something called CPU Q-Fan Control.

r/buildapc on Reddit: CPU Fan Randomly speeds up and slows down
December 17, 2024 -

Hey all,

I have a Ryzen 5 7600x paired with a Thermalright AXP90-X47 in a Fractal Terra case (on a Gigabyte b550 board)

Ever since I built it about 1 month ago, the CPU fan Randomly speeds up, even when idle and not doing anything, even when gaming and it being quiet for a while it just ramps up to max for about 5 minutes then goes back down to quiet. (This happens about 2-3 times every hour )

My goal is to make a silent pc, and I even power limited my CPU to 65W (I got the X version because it was on sale and cheaper than the non-X lol) I adjusted the fan curve in bios so it is silent and I have it constant at around the temperatures It has when idle and gaming (so a sudden temperature spike shouldn't change the fan speed)

I installed the Fancurve software and when it ramps up I try to manually set it lower from there but it just won't listen.

I even reinstalled the CPU cooler and put more thermal paste in

I am at my wits and and want to contact customer support because maybe it's something with the product, but wanted to see if any of you faced anything similar.

TL;DR: CPU fan Randomly speeds up when not doing anything special. set a power limit on CPU, set the fan curve to be smooth and not have changes at the temperatures I stay at most frequently. Also tried reinstalling.

P.S. I can provide photos with the power limit settings and the fan curve from bios if they would help

Random PC Fan Revving: What Causes It & How to Fix It
September 17, 2021 - For example, imagine your fan curve specifies a speed of 30% at a temperature of 25C and a speed of 70% at a temperature of 40C. It’s reasonable and completely normal to expect that your CPU will cross into the 40C region for brief periods of time during normal use, and when that happens, your fan will “rev up” the speed.

Solved: CPU fan ramping up and down for unnecessary reason - HP Support Community - 7956936
February 3, 2021 - I reviewed your post and I understand that the fan speed is increasing and decreasing under low load. Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted. I would like to inform you that this is by design and the fan kicks in when the CPU temperature reaches a certain limit. Having said that, I recommend you update the BIOS and the graphics driver from the below link and check if it helps.
