happy 2024, here's a throwback to my favorite philly craigslist missed connection i've ever found

Buying a bike - local shop or Craigslist?
How familiar are you with bikes, bike mechanics, and generally what you'd be looking for in a used bike?
If you aren't pretty well-versed in this stuff, craigslist is not a great option. It's not like buying a lamp or something—there is a lot going on with a bike, and judging whether it's in good enough shape (let alone whether it's a good deal) requires a fair amount of knowledge.
One partial shortcut is to go to forums focused on classic/vintage bikes (or whatever type you're looking at) and ask them for advice; but this only gets you so far. For one thing, every local market is different and a good price in Philly might be the steal of a lifetime in NYC, while also being a ripoff in Iowa City. So random people on the internet can't necessarily give you useful info on price.
And, they'll also just tell you "obviously make sure the frame is in good shape and all the parts are in good working order" which aren't things you can do if you have no knowledge base. It's possible to end up at best overpaying, and at worst getting a bike that either needs a lot of money at a bike shop to get up and running, or at worst has a cracked frame and is a total loss.
Tl;dr if you aren't already pretty well-versed in bike lore, you're better off going to a shop.
Firehouse Bikes in West Philly is a good option with rebuilt used bikes, but their stock (like every bike shop's) is completely fucked right now. It's not a good time to be buying a bike, sadly. If you can wait, I bet it will be much better in another six months or a year—supply chains getting back to normal will increase supply of new bikes and parts, while a bunch of people selling the bikes they bought as pandemic resolutions and then never used, will increase the supply of used bikes.
