My front door opens directly into my very open living room. Shoes come off at the door, and there are a LOT of shoes by the door. I want to find a kid-friendly cubby solution that will help me create an "entryway" feel by the front door. It needs to be easy to use or the kids won't use it (so no fold-out shelves like the nice ikea ones) and it can't have any tall parts that aren't against the wall (climbing hazards). So far everything I've found is either not enough storage, can't come away from the wall (I'm open to alternate suggestions on how to create an "entryway", but I still need the shoe storage, so I'm just trying to double it as a sort of partition), or is just stupidly ugly. It doesn't have to be art, but I'd rather it didn't look like something from my tool shed.
Anyone have ideas, or suggestions? I'd really appreciate it.

Get a bench large enough for them to all sit on at once if needed. If anyone has to wait to sit they’ll just kick the shoes off right where they are Get a basket for each person. Label with their name. Each person’s shoes go in their basket. If room put these baskets under the bench. Put a shelf over the bench. Baskets go on this shelf that hold each persons scarves, gloves, and any smaller items they need to take off. Hooks on the wall for each person’s coat and backpack/handbag. A console for mail and everyone personal items. Get a countertop mail sorter and a countertop file tray. Also a larger file box placed on or under the console - they have them that come inside baskets - to further sort everyone’s mail and papers into categories. Each week you can take the papers and mail out of the countertop sorters and file, trash, respond as needed. Any baskets that don’t fit under bench can go under console. Place a small trash can by the console as well. All they have to do is walk in, sit down, put shoes in their basket, put smaller items in their basket, hang up coat, shoes, place any papers in their own bin/tray, throw out trash, and then be on their way. It’s a system to decluttering the entry and it’s a beginning to keeping paper clutter from the rest of the house too.
