I was wondering what’s the best recent psychological thriller you’ve watched? I just watched coherence(2013), gone girl(2014), the gift(2015) and the invitation(2015) and was looking for some other good thrillers to watch. Preferably ones that have come out after 2010 or so. Let me know if you guys have any recommendations.

What are your favorite psychological thrillers or dramas? I really love shutter island, one flew over the cuckoos nest, girl interrupted, memento, skinamarink, etc. I’m looking for something like those that I’ve missed or have forgotten. Classics or new movie suggestions both please! I’ll take tv shows too, I’ve run out of shows to binge.

I found another post like this and people were giving recommendations like Fight club (1999) and generally stuff that's like 4+ years old, I'm not saying I don't like them because they're old, it's just I've already watched all of them.

It feels like there haven't been many big psychological thriller releases for a while, stuff like Memento, The Machinist, Nightcrawler, like movies that really stick in your head.

I tried googling it, but it still gives me older movies that i've already seen. For the past few years, has there been any good psychological thriller mindfucks that have come out, that really stick with you?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

OK, so obviously I’m a fan of the psychological thrillers, horror, etc. even psychological drama if it’s good enough I’m down. I’m looking for some new stuff to watch. I feel like I’ve seen everything which I know is not true but maybe with some suggestions I won’t waste an hour to two hours of my life on a shitty move.

Editing to add a small list of movies that are super gory that i liked (definitely not a full list of movies I would recommend in the psychological bubble, but for those people who don’t like things that have a lot of blood in it I figured I would post a small little last here):

Any of Jordan Peele movies(Get Out was his best in my opinion) heads up if you’re white his movies may make you a tad uncomfortable

Midsommar( some graphic Scenes but not necessarily gore)

Mother was good but definitely gore towards the end

Donnie Darko is a fav

Parasite is really amazing if you’re OK with watching subtitles it is one of my favorite movies

Sinister was great.

I like a Simple Favor and Gone Girl they are both good and have a similar vibe (very little blood, definitely not gore)

Leave the world behind was good but felt like it was not ended great like it left you looking for a sequel

Don’t worry darling was great

The circle was pretty good

The Strays was reallllllllly good

Personally, I like anything and night Shamalama dingdong( M night Shyamalan) puts out however he is definitely like a you’ll love it or hate it kind of guy. His movies can fill a bit on the silly side, but I still think they’re great.

Invisible man

Gerald’s Game

Missing was alright

Hard Candy can be intense and the “gore” isn’t shown so I don’t consider it gore

I enjoyed Ma not very gore at all

Split was great

We need to talk about Kevin was good too

I Care A lot was pretty good

10 cloverfield lane was good but left me wanting more

Black phone was fantastic but definitely unsettling no gore

Oh and there was this one movie on Netflix that I can’t think of the name right now but basically it’s about a guy that’s like a celebrity of sorts and he’s accused of murdering his girlfriend he hires this really attractive, female lawyer and her husband is the prosecutors lawyer and it basically turns into like affair but it’s so much more than that it’s pretty great. There’s a few twists that I didn’t see coming I just can’t for the life of me think of the name.

Edit number 2 lol

Found the name of the movie it’s Mea Culpa

By mind blowing, I mean the vibe Shutter Island gave when you thought you knew what going on then all a sudden holy shit you were WRONG.

Just that complete surprise that messes with your head and has you suddenly questioning life itself.

Movies that gave me similar feelings (though maybe didn’t do a complete 180) were: Donnie Darko The Zodiac The Descent In The Tall Grass Night crawler (maybe this doesn’t fit here but I loved the eerie atmosphere and the fact I wasn’t sure what was going to happen) The Guilty (same reason as above)

Also, if there’s no sick (as in vomiting) in the movie, even better. I have a phobia of it but I know it’s not a big deal to others so you might not remember - no worries if not, I can check it myself!

Thank you in advance, I haven’t watched a good psychological film a while and I’m craving one.

Just a few extras:

  • I really like films where times sort of messed up

  • I’m also really into hidden/deeper meanings time films where you feel like you come out of it with a perspective change or have you questioning reality

  • If nothing brings to mind, anything that has the Twilight film type of lighting will suffice lol

April 22, 2023 - However, it does also play in the psychological thriller genre. The story concerns a man who invites his family over for Christmas dinner only to reveal that he has trapped what he believes to be the Devil himself in his basement. While the movie received mixed reviews from critics, casual movie-goers found it rather enjoyable. The Redditor Substantial_Box_1703 admitted it might not be the best, but it was still very good: it leaves its viewers wondering the whole time whether the being trapped in the basement is the Devil or something else entirely.

I feel like I’ve watched every single good thriller on the planet: prisoners, parasite, forgotten, memories of murder, oldboy, i saw the devil, memento, get out, Nightcrawler, 10 cloverfield lane, shutter island (obviously) etc. It’s my fav genre.

I’m very open to movies from other countries around the world and not just the western hemisphere!

r/horror on Reddit: Looking for the scariest psychological horror movies you can think of
September 28, 2023 -

During October I like to watch a Horror movie every night, ending with a full evening of Horror on Halloween, I like the Halloween session to actually terrify me but I've become very desensitised to Horror so most of the slasher/monster/gore/Supernatural movies just don't scare me anymore.

So I'm looking for recommendations for psychological horror movies that are either terrifying, unbelievably creepy or extremely uncomfortable.

I'm asking Reddit because every list of the "scariest movies" has completely failed me.

Think along the lines of Midsommar, Dogtooth, Creep and Get Out... but scarier.

Thank you!

Edit: Lots of replies so I may not be able to respond to all of them, but I appreciate them, and will let you know what I think of the movies you suggested after I watch them!

I would personally recommend The Invitation (the 2015 movie -- not the 2022 one, although the 2022 movie, which is unrelated to 2015 movie, is entertaining). It's a great example of extremely simple but brilliant storytelling. The characters are wonderful. The acting is great. Same goes for the writing and directing. You get some queer representation. The story is familiar, as all stories sort of are, but The Invitation tackles a familiar situation in a way that feels fresh. It plays with your mind a bit as you try to figure out what's going on. It's debatably arthouse, which I'm suuuuuuuper allergic to, but it never feels look-at-how-smart-and-artsy-and-weird-we-are-for-the-sake-of-being-smart-and-artsy-and-weird. Also, the ending is an absolute stunner. No spoilers, of course, but the last few shots are just so delightful and rewarding. They elevate an already outstanding movie. I can't really say anything more about those final shots without ruining your experience, but it's... It's great, dude. I love this movie more and more each time I watch it. I just showed it to my boyfriend and he was blown away. It's the kind of movie that sticks with you for a long time. At least, it's stuck with me over the years. Lots of pathos. Lots of mindfuckery. And lots of follow through. So, yeah. Can't recommend it enough. I love a story that puts characters first, and this movie certainly does that. The emotions hit you like a ton of bricks. It's just so wonderfully executed. I could go on and on about it. Blah-blah-blah... I think it's a winner. Check it out, if you want to. If you do, reply to this comment and let me know what you think! Cheers.

I prefer those types of movies. Thing is, I think fear comes from the shock of something happening to someone but that only REALLY works if you didn't know that kind of stuff happened or the film makers did such a good job making you feel empathy that you get upset from seeing it happen to the people in the film. We often have built in empathy for animals like dogs and cats which is why they tend to be so effective. With that TED Talk out of the way... IDK how scary these are but they're some of my favorites that are in the vein you described. Only one that made me physically uncomfortable (anxious) was Nocturnal Animals for 'that scene'. But they're all worth the watch! Nocturnal Animals St. Maude The Lodge House That Jack Built The Lighthouse Strangers Funny Games Clockwork Orange The Gift Not technically horror but kinda scary and a great film: Ex Machina
