I design magazines for a living. I subscribe to magazines I like the design of (Hi Bon Appetite!), read typography textbooks, and surf Behance a lot. Text books are great for learning the basics, magazines are great for seeing those principles in practice, and Behance is full of out-of-this-world creative typography and layout. I’ve been looking for tutorials and walkthroughs on magazine designing, but a lot of them are not practical. They take a free-for-all approach that doesn’t take into account working with a predetermined word count or ads on pages. Does anybody know of a good magazine resource for creating QUALITY magazine page designs? I’m seeing either impractical projects or low quality projects.
Also, does anyone know of a great place to browse a variety of magazines for inspiration? I have tried Issuu and Calameo, but I have a hard time filtering out all the low-quality, ugly publications.
