Buffet, sideboard, server, credenza: Do you find yourself using these terms interchangeably? I sure do! After all, there's so much overlap between these furniture types that a piece's classification is often determined solely by its location in your home. Here's four storage pieces: Sideboard: The distinguishing feature of sideboards, according to Houzz, are the short legs. The cabinets may also reach all the way to the floor. Buffet: There is no defining difference between a buffet and sideboard, but if the piece has relatively high legs, it may be referred to as a buffet instead of a sideboard. Server: A server is smaller, shorter, and more formal than a buffet or sideboard. Credenza: Historically a credenza referred to a piece of furniture with no legs and cabinets that reached to the floor, but many modern credenzas have legs. They're likely to have sliding doors as well. There is no difference between a sideboard and a buffet in terms of definition. A sideboard used in the dining room may be called a buffet, and when placed in the living room, called a sideboard. Historically speaking, buffets were first used in Sweden to lay out big spreads of food and drink, known as smorgasbords. The concept of buffet tables caught on in France and then throughout the rest of Europe. In practice, I have noticed that shops and manufacturers seem to call long, low storage pieces on higher legs buffets, and those on shorter (or no) legs sideboards. The word “credenza” comes from the English word “credence” and the Italian word for “belief” – which makes sense, considering the first credenzas were used as a place for food that needed to be tasted to test for poison before being served to a VIP. Early credenzas had no legs, just cabinets reaching to the floor. During the mid-20th century, credenzas enjoyed a renewed popularity among the modern design crowd – but the “new” credenzas tended to be long, low cabinets on slender legs, often with sliding doors. I am a total design amateur, in the midst of furnishing an empty house. Here are the places I’ve been looking. Some of them are $$$ but could be worth it for a special statement piece. West Elm: I love the look of all their pieces, but a lot of the wood is engineered wood and it shows. They have some hard wood pieces in cheaper woods which are nice. And not all MDF is bad, just always seems like more style than the substance (but I still buy from them when they have what I’m looking for and no one else does) Crate and Barrel: I always thought they were pricey, but their quality seems a step up from West Elm and a lot of the pieces are made in the USA. I picked out my media stand from them CB2: Crate and Barrel’s slightly funkier sister. Slightly lower price point, but a lot of stuff looks cool and I have my eyes on several sideboards from them Article: online only store in Canada. From what I can tell (reading online, Reddit etc) they’re good value for the price. One of the lowest price points of the bunch listed here but lots of nice pieces Lulu and Georgia: haven’t gotten anything from here. Seems like one of the higher price points of the bunch, but I like their style. School House Electric: mostly lighting but a lot of retro (school-style) styles Joy Bird: lets you custom design your pieces. Great reviews on their site but on 3rd party sites they got mixed to poor review - especially on things taking forever. I decided not to use them on “custom” upholstery but I haven’t ruled them out for other pieces so they may have sideboard options Room and Board: mostly made in the USA, and the site gives you details on where all their prices are made which is helpful. Skews more expensive but a lot of what I’ve read says the quality high is reliable Anthropologie: their home section is a dream IMO - expensive but they have beautiful pieces so you’ll be paying for a statement. Although their shipping process is pretty opaque (after my order my shipment went into a black hole for 2 weeks with no update on estimated ship or delivery dates) Urban Outfitters: some furniture, less expensive than Anthropologie (same parent company fwiw), but lots of cute decorative elements Poly and Bark: similar to Article from what I can tell McGee and Co: pretty expensive but curated. Haven’t picked anything from them, but would consider one of their lower priced items Yamazaki home: some furniture, lots of functional storage.
