Crib Bumpers: Are They Safe for Baby?
September 27, 2022 - You really don’t. Since 1973, federal regulations have required crib slats to be narrow enough to prevent baby’s head from poking through—no more than 2 and ⅜ inches apart, about the width of a soda can.

Why Crib Bumpers Are Never Safe
September 24, 2023 - Through her research, pre-birthing classes, and conversations with her OB-GYN, the Illinois senator already learned of the dangers of crib bumpers. Senator Duckworth saw "tested for safety" on the packaging, but realized that likely was referring to choking hazards and that the materials used were fire retardant.

January 21, 2025 - To sum it all up, crib bumpers are not a safe addition to your little one’s bed. There will be time for extra cozy bedding when your child gets older. LO (6MO) wakes several times a night because he bumps his head on the crib. I’ve read some posts of similar babies doing this and people suggesting crib bumpers… but MANY people saying any type of crib bumper is unsafe due to suffocating risk. What about a braided bumper? There are no strings, no mesh, no loose fabric. What would the risks be?

My son started standing in his crib and yesterday I saw his legs slip through the slats on the side as he fell sideways, I was SURE he broke his leg (was totally fine).
Just need to know what I can use to prevent this in the future.
Editing to add I’m asking for an ALTERNATIVE to bumpers. I will not be using bumpers.
I have 2 sleep sacks already so it seems that’s the best route. Thanks guys!

My two children have Osteogenesis Imperfecta - brittle bone disorder They’ve broken their backs while playing, broke a femur on a blanket, a tibia on cardboard, skull fracture from a toy box, toe fracture from walking, etc. They’ve never ONCE broken while in their cribs. Ever. One is 9 years old and one is 19 months old. My 19 month old can get his limbs through the slats and rough house in the crib and still be fine. Crib bumpers are unsafe and unnecessary.

This is such an American thing, I had to google crib bumpers :-). Over here (Netherlands), nobody uses them - they are forbidden by the maternity nurses (we all get about a week of help from a maternity nurse right after giving birth, (s)he teaches you all about caring for a newborn) and therefore you can't buy them. And still, we don't have an overflow of kids with broken bones from cribs in the hospital! So my bet would be: don't do anything, he'll learn in a whim that he shouldn't put his feet between the slats when standing :-).
