Cuban Currency-Caution
I feel like this could have easily been figured out by doing even the slightest bit of reading, even on this sub. There are like 2-3 posts a week where people ask what kind of money to bring. Their money has been absolutely useless for a while now. When I went in November family told me not to even mess with the official exchange and to let them exchange it for me on the black market. People don’t want pesos because they’re worthless. They want American dollars, euros, Canadian money etc and the black market rate is insanely higher than the official rate. More on reddit.com

Banks and money exchange places will not take Cuban pesos because outside of Cuba it’s worthless. Best bet is to try to find someone that’s going to Cuba soon and try to exchange with them. Good luck man More on reddit.com
Black market rate currency meaning?
The government rate is meaningless. As is most things governmental. It is phony rate. The street rate is the real effective rate. People want to get rid of pesos and buy dollars and they are willing to pay 300 to 325 pesos per dollar. So, you should get nothing less than 300 pesos. Be aware that in restaurants, bars and stores you will get an inferior rate. Like 240, 200 or less. You are ALWAYS better changing your dollars for pesos and paying for dinner in pesos. If you pay in dollars they will calculate it at the lower rate. Just do not get stuck with any because they are worthless outside of Cuba. You can change in the street. If a guy offers you 280, just say 310. But be aware they may short you if you do not speak Spanish. I just came back. More on reddit.com

October 9, 2024 - Until 1st January 2021, Cuba had spent nearly 20 years living and working with 2 currencies, the CUP ( Cuban Peso ) and the CUC ( Cuban Convertible Peso ). The CUP was the everyday currency used to pay wages, utilities and basic foodstuffs. Meanwhile, the CUC ( pegged CUC1:USD1) was the currency used for everything else ( buying imported food, luxury goods, homes, meals and accommodation ).

April 18, 2025 -
Hi all,
I'm traveling to Cuba in June with my family. It will be their first time, I lived there for a few months in 2016, and visited yearly until 2020, and haven't been back since.
When I was there, USD/EUR wasn't accepted, only CUP and CUC. I understand this has now changed, and you can use those foreign currencies.
The exchange rate for CUP to USD used to be 25CUP=1USD. I'm seeing on reddit that this has changed and it fluctuates but it is more in the ball park of 120-300 CUP = 1 USD.
Does anyone know why google does not reflect this change? If you google search the conversion it still says the older exchange rate. It's been confusing as I've been trying to do research and calculate how much cash to bring with us.
Thanks!

Google has the "official" rate (25) The "official" rate once you land on the island is about 110 (think CADECA/Airport exchange spot) The unofficial rate on the street right now is 364. You should never pay in dollars because the rates won't be good (each establishment sets their own rate). So let's say you go to a restaurant and the bill is 1000 pesos. That restaurant is likely going to set their rate around 250. So if you pay in dollars, you're paying more/losing money. So I suggest paying for everything in pesos - though if you want to tip in $1 bills, that works as well and will be very appreciated.
