June 10, 2024 - Maybe it was because I’d arrived with lowered expectations and half-imagining I’d be hungry throughout our trip, but I didn’t find the tasteless food that people described to me. Instead, I found a delightful fusion of Spanish, African and Caribbean flavours, with delicious local ingredients that had me saying, “Más, por favor!” · Here are some of my favourite Cuban foods that we tried during our visit.

August 28, 2025 - Each country prides itself on its own distinct recipe, with Cuba’s version being a comfort staple that’s both extremely flavorful and easy to prepare. Picadillo derives from the word picar, meaning in English to “mince” or “chop” ingredients. In this case that includes ground meat and tomatoes, as well as olives, capers, and raisins for a touch of sweetness. Crispy potatoes are often added as well. It’s then served together with black beans and rice, or used as a filling in foods like empanadas.

January 22, 2025 - Hence the name, ropa vieja, which translates into “old clothes.” · OK, so that’s one narrative. Equally fantastical but nevertheless, unquestionably true is this other narrative.

In Havana we had done our homework and went to the private restaurants that people were opening and had 5 nights of wonderful meals, 2 of which I would classify as 4+ star meals. Go to Cuba for the weather, the people and the music and leave our first world food expectations behind and you'll have an amazing and sometimes magical experience.

Although the government's monthly food basket provides basic commodities for the population, it is almost entirely imported, and the government reported shortages and delays in its distribution. Pre-pandemic data from the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology showed a high prevalence of anaemia in children aged 6-23 months in eastern and central provinces and Havana. Cuba is one of the Caribbean countries most exposed to hurricanes, droughts and unseasonal rains.

February 2, 2024 - As you can see, no vegetarian should complain about not eating well while in Cuba, but despite the vast agricultural variety, four factors can make it difficult for you to access all the above: 1) Seasonality of produce. Especially when it comes to fruit, you might have to just consume whatever’s available at the moment because a lot of produce is seasonal. The mango season is from May to August. Avocadoes arrive in August-September. Large yams are an end-of-the-year type of food.

November 14, 2024 - Seriously, no culinary journey through Cuba would be complete without diving head first into a bowl of arroz amarillo. And again, best served cooked at home by grandma or as a side dish to the lechon asado. It’s also a fantastic hangover cure.
