June 10, 2024 - Maybe it was because I’d arrived with lowered expectations and half-imagining I’d be hungry throughout our trip, but I didn’t find the tasteless food that people described to me. Cuban food on Keto?

Garlic chicken is my go-to. There's only a bit of sugar in the onions on the side and the orange juice in the garlic sauce, and it's still usually <10g total. You just have to resist the plantains and moros or ask to have them subbed out for greens.

Churrascos is good too, but it's just flank steak with chimichurri that you could throw together yourself for like $5. I ordered it once at a semi-fancy place and couldn't help feeling like I got ripped off.

May 17, 2024 -

I'm going to be honest with everyone here, I could really use 14 days without caring about a thing in the universe, and cuba seems to offer that. However, food is also important for me. I don't need anything crazy but at least matching the quality of Carnival cruise lines would be my minimum to be happy. How's the food situation in Cuba? Will I be upset? Or should I target 7-10 days somewhere like Mexico?

10 Cuban Dishes To Try On Your Next Trip Abroad - Classic Journeys
August 28, 2025 - Each country prides itself on its own distinct recipe, with Cuba’s version being a comfort staple that’s both extremely flavorful and easy to prepare. Picadillo derives from the word picar, meaning in English to “mince” or “chop” ingredients. In this case that includes ground meat and tomatoes, as well as olives, capers, and raisins for a touch of sweetness. Crispy potatoes are often added as well. It’s then served together with black beans and rice, or used as a filling in foods like empanadas.

In Havana we had done our homework and went to the private restaurants that people were opening and had 5 nights of wonderful meals, 2 of which I would classify as 4+ star meals. Go to Cuba for the weather, the people and the music and leave our first world food expectations behind and you'll have an amazing and sometimes magical experience.

Answer (1 of 11): Wouldn’t be too worried about the food itself. Just the water used to wash it off. In fact, I’m not even sure if the water quality in Cuba is really all that bad, but the local bacteria will be foreign to your stomach as a visitor. Be careful not to wash off fruit and vegetable...

Cuban Food is Really, Really Good: you just need to find it!
February 2, 2024 - As you can see, no vegetarian should complain about not eating well while in Cuba, but despite the vast agricultural variety, four factors can make it difficult for you to access all the above: 1) Seasonality of produce. Especially when it comes to fruit, you might have to just consume whatever’s available at the moment because a lot of produce is seasonal. The mango season is from May to August. Avocadoes arrive in August-September. Large yams are an end-of-the-year type of food.

November 14, 2024 - Seriously, no culinary journey through Cuba would be complete without diving head first into a bowl of arroz amarillo. And again, best served cooked at home by grandma or as a side dish to the lechon asado. It’s also a fantastic hangover cure. You can’t talk about the food in Cuba without a good helping of frijoles negros—black beans!
