What did you name your custom domain?
Registering a custom domain is a smart idea. But there are lots of things to consider when you pick your domain name. Let's say your name is Your Name. If Your Name is not an uncommon name, yourname.com might not be available. You could try your-name.com with a hyphen, but I don't recommend it. I did that and found it to be a pain to have to emphasize to people how important that hyphen was. You could try yourname.me. The .me top-level domain (TLD) is increasingly popular and a good choice at least for personal domains. There are scads of other TLDs like .us and lots more to consider. But if your actual name is long and hard for most people to spell, you might want to consider shortening and/or simplifying. We had a friend years ago whose last name was sort of like Hickenlooper-Radowitz. I would not have recommended that she register "hickenlooper-radowitz.com"! -- although in her case the hyphen might have made sense, since she did hyphenate her bipartite surname. Her first name was Eileen. I might have suggested eileenhr.com or something like that. If you think you'll ever want to share the domain as a family thing -- you know [email protected] and [email protected] , well, you might not want to put your own first name into the domain in that case. The last thing I'll mention is the issue of brevity. I like my ProtonMail pm.me address because it's succinct and easy to dictate to people. For my personal domain I use my two initials @ myfirstnamemylastname.com. Works fine. If you are planning to use a domain mainly as an address for your website, then brevity isn't a big deal. Most people get to websites using browser search or links in email etc. But your email address is often given to people by voice. so clarity and brevity are useful virtues for an email address to have. is Custom Email domain worth it?
Definitely get a private domain. The biggest pro is that if you switch email providers, you don’t have to update any of your accounts. When I was looking for an email host I tried Zoho, Proton, Apple, MXRoute, and at least one or two more I’m forgetting. You don’t want to switch all of your logins and contact info more than once if you can avoid it. I 100% agree with the other poster that you should aim for a .com. My .family domain regularly gets rejected as not a real email when I try to sign up places with it, and even my .us domain was blocked once. More on reddit.com

About custom domains and GitHub Pages
If you set a custom domain for a user or organization site, by default, the same custom domain will be used for all project sites owned by the same account. For more information about site types, see What is GitHub Pages?. For example, if the custom domain for your user site is www.octocat.com, and you have a project site with no custom domain configured that is published from a repository called octo-project, the GitHub Pages site for that repository will be available at www.octocat.com/octo-project.

If the zone is on the Enterprise plan, make sure that you release the zone hold before adding the custom domain. A zone hold would prevent the custom subdomain from activating. If you do not want to point your nameservers to Cloudflare, you must create a custom CNAME record to use a subdomain with Cloudflare Pages. After logging in to your DNS provider, add a CNAME record for your desired subdomain, for example, shop.example.com.

r/ProtonMail on Reddit: What did you name your custom domain?
March 6, 2021 -

I’m considering using a custom domain for my proton mail account (so if proton ever goes belly up I can transfer my email to new provider), and it seems like most people name their domain @firstlast.com, is this a good idea? I plan on using an alias service (ie simplelogin) but it seems weird to use my full name as my domain- wondering how others named their domain and how I should name mine.
