As far as privacy is concerned, there is no advantage in my opinion. I have a custom domain email address because I want to be independent of my email provider. By that I mean that I want to be able to switch to a different email address without telling anyone my new email address. Answer from essenbisderarztkommt on reddit.com

This week I saw a post here showing how you can host your email with icloud for really cheap and it got me thinking about this.

What are some self-hosted solutions for email with your own domain and what are the costs associated with them?

Also open to non-self-hosted options like the icloud one.

I have a website with SquareSpace and I’m signed up for the Basic plan at almost $200/year. Domain name was purchased with SquareSpace. In order to have Mailerlite integration, I have to upgrade my website to the Core plan, which will bring it up to about $270/year. Okay, fine, I’ve accepted that.

Now it seems to be HEAVILY recommended that I get a custom email address (ex. [email protected]) for deliverability purposes. With Google Workspace, which is what SquareSpace recommends, that is ANOTHER $86/year minimum. For pretty much nothing. Mailerlite is my EMS and SquareSpace is providing hosting and website building services, but $86/year for simply my own name that I already paid for as an email address is something I don’t want to pay for. That’s something that should have already been included in one of the other services I’m paying for.

My point isn’t to come here and vent, though. Rather, I would like to know if there are any other services in which I could create a custom email address using my SquareSpace domain and use with Mailerlite for either cheap or completely free. Again, not to sound cheap, but that $86/year isn’t even for any actual services; Mailerlite is my EMS. I would just like to have an email address that isn’t a gmail account.

For context, I have a month-old website. It’s an author website, though I still haven’t published any books yet. Waiting on my book cover commission.

Tl;dr I would like any recommendations for a provider of cheap custom email addresses in which I could use my existing SquareSpace domain as the email domain.

Hi there

I was wondering what people think is the best way to get domain hosting and a private domain email address together?

Initially Go Daddy is cheap at £21.87 (GBP) for the first year for both products but then it jumps to £90.87 a year thereafter.

Eventually, my website will be with WordPress anyway. Can they provide a private domain email address?

l am still in the business development stages so l don't want to commit too much too early (a common problem l believe). Are there any better ways around this?

Thanks everyone

I've come up with a quick idea I want to try this weekend but there's a chance it might be a complete waste of time. What's the cheapest way of getting a domain with email up and running?

At the moment I have to buy a domain (£9) and get hosting (£35 at least) and I'm literally on a shoe string. Is there anyone that will allow the setting up of emails without hosting? Is that possible? A catch-all would do.

I'm a 16 year old photographer and I make my money through weddings and portraits. Right now I get around 1 wedding per month and even less portraits, so I'm looking into building a website, and buying a domain. I'm young and I don't know a lot about this stuff, if I buy the domain for £20/ year, do I also get the email? How do I use the email?? Or do I have to go through Google to host it? And for the website I'm looking at wix, but I can't afford the 15/month for wix and also the 25/month for Google, not until I get more clients.. Can someone give me the step by step to get the domain, the email, and build a website for less than £30/month, or is that just not possible?

edit: thanks for all the answers, sorry if I don't reply to them all but I am reading them and writing down the info, thanks :)

edit 2: solved! I've gone through Google workspace starter, £5/month (you have to sign up for the business plus, and then change subscription). I went through Google for the storage and email hosting. I'm making the site with Google sites, but in the future I'll head over to wix or squarespace.

I now own tysphotostash.com and hopefully this is the start of a successful business? (check it out if you want but it's all over the place ATM)

Far too often I see people posting their gmail, hotmail or ISP email address on signage, business cards, vehicles, etc. This locks you in to a potentially costly and compromising situation if you decide to move, change ISPs or your service provider goes out of business. For a relatively low yearly fee you can get your own domain name and have it forwarded to any provider you like. Boost your company profile!

I'm in the market for an email service for my custom domain name. I only need one account. Below are my requirements. Any good suggestions?

  • Cheap: Zoho, MXroute, and NameCheap seems to fit the bill.

  • Good IP Repuation: I'm honestly not sure how to check this out if I don't even know the shared IP addresses that the service uses. I imagine Google Workspace would be perfect but it's too expensive.

  • No SMTP Relay Service: I actually currently use Amazon SES and I find that my emails sometimes go to recipients' junk mail folders. So, I don't want to use an SMTP service that's meant for automated messages or mass mailing.

For those with custom domains:

-- cost per year

-- cost per yeat after initial/intorductory offer

-- length of intro offer and length of renewal

-- SSL/TLS cert cost, if used

-- perceived benefits

is the long term costs worth it, especially for the average user.

r/selfhosted on Reddit: Thinking of using a custom domain for personal email – worth it?
June 9, 2025 -

Hey all,

I’m planning to get a custom domain (10 years via Cloudflare) and use it for personal email only, something like: [email protected] for main/personal use [email protected] for logins/newsletters Maybe a wildcard or spam@ for other stuff

Still deciding between self-hosting (Mailcow, Mail-in-a-Box) vs. using services like Migadu, Proton, or iCloud+.

Curious to know: Do you use a custom domain just for personal email? Are you self-hosting or using a provider? Any issues with deliverability, spam, or maintenance? Do you think it’s worth the efforts?

Would love to hear your setups and thoughts before I jump in.

I’m looking to start my own domain and would like to have my own @companyname.com email accounts. Only needing 1-10 email addresses. Looking for possibly free to start, or a cheap solution as I’m just starting my business.

I’ve tried Zoho and i don’t want to use it.

Any suggestions and plan of actions?

TIA.

r/selfhosted on Reddit: Any free email services that support a custom domain?
November 7, 2025 -

Hey everyone!

I know this is probably not all that relevant to self-hosting, but I'm not too sure where else to ask this.

So basically, I recently bought myself a custom email domain for my website, but I want to be able to have a custom email with it.

I initially set up Cloudflare email forwarding, but the issue I have with that is I cannot reply to emails I receive through it. I tried to set up a custom email server, but ultimately it was beyond my skill level.

ProtonMail is my main email provider, but I only have the free plan. Although I am thinking about upgrading, I am wondering if there are any email services out there that have custom domain support for free. I know there are a lot of cheap services out there, like MXroute, but I have decided that if I am going to pay for something, I am just going to get a ProtonMail Plus plan. However, I do want to look into all the free options.

If there are ones that support IMAP/SMTP, then that is a plus, but if a free service doesn't offer that, then it doesn't bother me.

I have heard a fair amount of talk about Zoho Mail, but it doesn't seem to have a free plan as far as I have looked. Skiff would have been an amazing option, but it doesn't exist anymore.

Are there any free services out there that match what I am looking for?
