I’ve done fine with PDF. I believe ATS just scans for key words. Reason I went PDF is because it opens on any computer, using any operating system or bespoke CMS. Formats like docx or Apple pages etc can also change formatting based on the users settings- destroying all your beautiful work. PDF all the way. More on reddit.com

I know PDF is more professional but word is better to beat ATS software. So what is the better format when submitting resumes. When I submit Cover letters I always do PDF, however for resume I do word, should I do PDF?

I don’t normally comment in these threads, but as I just ended a 6 month job hunt while employed I wanted to offer my experience. I was looking for a position with fair market salary and room for growth. After spending 3 months creating cover letters for each position, filling out lengthy applications through employer webpages, and spending too much time on each position I decided to change my approach. Using the one click apply on indeed got me consistent interviews and had me flying through applications. After three months of using Indeed’s one click apply, many interviews, and a few bad offers, I finally got the offer I was searching for. Always used pdfs for every resume I submitted, the only company that mentioned that being a problem was Navy Federal Credit Union. With this being said I have signed a contract with Microsoft and can’t believe how fortunate I am for this opportunity. Quick summary, it is the content of the resume, not the format. Use pdf, and don’t spend too much time on one application.
