CVS Pharmacy

These are very different options. One will land you working in a pharmacy, the other puts you on track to do research in a lab. Pharmacy school will costs you, but it is a fairly stable and well paying job if you don't mind working weird hours at CVS or Walgreens doing what I've heard is pretty mundane work. Hospital pharmacy jobs are a bit better but are harder to get. The MS/research route will make you less money, which is especially painful if you have to live in a high cost of living city like Boston or SF to get a job. You will probably always make less than a pharmacist even if highly experienced because industry has a pretty hard limit on how high someone with a MS can climb. You will likely end up bored in industry without a PhD. That said, industry hours and perks are quite nice (I have several friends working in pharmacology/biotech). I went the research route and now am a prof in drug discovery, but I still collaborate with pharma. I'm glad I went the route I did because I like the research grind. I'm driven by questions and research, not money, which tends to be the big draw to pharmacy. More on reddit.com

Ya CVS is bad. Me and a friend both switched from WAGS after the pandemic due to worsening conditions... She quit CVS in less than a month. I quit in about 6 months. My store's temporary PIC was told they only needed help at that store for maybe a month and they conned him into PIC there, which was 2 hours from where he lived. I was promised 30h/wk floating between 2 stores in the same town with less stress than WAGS. They put me full time at his store on track to be PIC there. I played the game till I found something better then ran. They gave me a "sign on bonus" after I was hired and tried to threaten me not to quit because I'd have to pay it back... For a bonus that was less than a single paycheck. I paid it back lol. CVS pharmacists, you are allowed to quit! No job is worth your life. I'd sooner default on my student loans and change career paths than go back to CVS. Actually, I'd sooner live in a cardboard box on the side of the road then go back. "This is all I've ever known and I can't switch now" -no, all the systems may be a little different but the core mechanics are the same, you will learn. "I just graduated and I can't afford to quit" -Do the bare minimum at your job, they can't afford to fire you because no one else will take the job. Don't come early, don't stay late, and put your time/energy into applying for other jobs. All the other jobs know how bad CVS is and no manager will fault you for quitting after a month. If they’d use their lobbying powers for good and hold PBMs accountable for screwing pharmacies on reimbursements, this wouldn’t be an issue. But as long as PBMs rule, it won’t change. More on reddit.com
