r/cybersecurity on Reddit: A software developer venturing into Cyber security
July 5, 2023 -

I'm a software developer wanting to learn Cyber security. To be honest, I love both. I know Cyber security is a very broad field so I wanted to know if there is any intersection role between software development and cyber security. Many research I made is telling me Cyber security doesn't involve programming and coding at all and it seems like an entirely different section.

So my real question is can I do both??, I learnt I can't learn the whole of Cyber security because it's a very broad field same as software development.

If I can, what are the steps I need to take?? Are the cons more than the pros? If anyone is doing both, at least you can tell how it's going for you and if it's really a good role.

And if I'm applying for a job, what will I say I am, a software developer or ???

Does anyone have experience with cyber security?

What do you see yourself doing? Do you want to be working on cyber security applications and code, or do you want to work at a hardware or networking level, something that might be a little more IT-oriented? I've worked in security on the coding side, and know plenty of people who are software developers in the security field, as well as non-coding people like infosec analysts, network security people, etc.

Is a bachelor's in CS a good choice for cyber security?

A bachelor's in CS in a great choice if you're interested in cyber security. While you earn your CS degree, work on also earning your PCIP or HCP.

Frankly, a Computer Science degree is more valuable than a Cyber Security degree as many degrees in Cyber Security are overly specific to the point of not being useful practically.

Developer jobs vs Cybersecurity for a career changer

Cyber security would be closer to network engineering/system administration since it would concern, networks/firewalls, servers etc.

So if you never configured a router in CLI or crimped an ethernet cable, it would be faster to get a programming job with your experience.

When I had an interview with other recently graduated students at checkpoint(big firewall company) they had a cyber security course of 4 months when they hired people. They didn't seem too pick about major choice but the pay rate was $50-60k per year to start.

Cyber Security vs Programming

Look deeply into the government-side CS careers. You will not find anything worthwhile unless you're a government contractor. Being directly commissioned into any branch with a CS degree is career suicide in the aspect that the military, as yet, has no REAL CS/Programming jobs because cyber is just now being considered.

You'll have a much better life if you stick with private sector or contractors. Don't just take my word, look around the sub as to how government programming jobs are viewed.

Edit: And look at the length of these job's training and the requirements. High school diploma or GED with a course that's less than 5 months. Do not undersell yourself.
