I'm looking to buy an AC. I'm leaning towards Japanese manufacturers because they have better quality. Mitsubishi and O General are ruled out because they are expensive and don't seem worth it just for summer usage.
Now among the next best - Daikin, Hitachi and Panasonic, what would you recommend?
I've read that service quality varies from place to place, how do these brands serve in Chennai? Looking for both installation as well services in the future.
I just talked to an independent sales rep for a local installer who strongly suggested NOT to buy Daikin at the moment due to the rumor that 3/4 of their support work force has left the company. He said customer support is gaping and parts are shipping with incorrect fulfillment.
Has anyone else heard this or is it a sales guy fantasy pitch?
I saw a post where in person was comparing Daikin ac with Mitsubishi. There is no comparison Daikin Ac are just bad.
So Daikin earlier used to import their ACs in India and sell them, these ACs were very good, hence the good brand value but later on due to high India demand and tax changes, they shifted their manufacturing to India. Now this is where the twist comes, they didn’t use the same quality components for India as they did for international market.
My AC guy showed me when he opened my Daikin AC that the same components are being used in Daikin as in other brands and the quality has gone totally down hill.
2 years back, I changed my house and replaced my old Carrier ACs with Mitsubishi Electric ones. So now I have 3 Mitsubishi and 2 Daikin AC and 1 Carrier, and the difference is day and night.
This is my observation from my house:-
Mitsubishi >> Carrier > Daikin.
Also, my older Daikin AC works better than my new Daikin AC as I noted earlier. Not to say, the Carrier AC is old and their quality has gone totally down hill to shit.
So if you’re buying for life, go for Mitsubishi. Daikin AC break down more often, yes Mitsubishi is expensive but if an AC doesn’t even perform their intended purpose then it’s a total waste of money.
From my research the big three names (you know them) are the way to go in North America. A lot of my research suggested that Daikin is a lower end and unreliable HVAC brand... That surprises me because typically Japanese companies stand for quality and reliability. Daikin seems to insulate its units very well to make them fairly quiet and efficient.
Thoughts?
In 2016 I bought a high seer Daikin central air system, paid over $12k. The unit worked great until this year when the 6 y.o. compressor failed. "No worries" I think. I have a 12 year parts/labor warranty. I was so wrong. My AC was out over 2 weeks with 100+ degree weather. The warranty division of Daikin/Goodman told me they couldn't help, that I needed to call one of the dealers on their website. I did that but none of them would call me back. I later found out why. Their warranty payout rates are so pitiful that the dealers don’t want the work. So if it’s not the dealer that installed it, they’re not going to touch it. I finally found a guy that was willing to do the legwork to find a replacement unit and install it. It cost me ~$1400 but he was worth every penny. Everything these days seems like a scam or sham.
So my father bought an split AC, 2 years ago in March of 2022. Under the normal terms and Conditions the company would fix any part of it if the AC stops working until April of 2023 cause that's when the warrenty expires. Anyway cut short to January 2023 the AC stops cooling after numerous calls to customer care they finnally reach out to us in February and took several visit to rule out the problem and almost took another month to fix it. There was a leak in the coil so they had to change the whole inside unit, well when doing that the guy out of spite dropped the plastic tray which is necessary to collect water from the AC. The very same day at night the AC starts to leak water from the corner on to the mattress and when I woke up in the morning one side of the bed was completely drenched (had to change throw it out cause it was ruined) so the very next day i again raised a complaint about the leaking AC on 27th to which they came on 28th and inspected and approved that the tray was broken, I took the service completion paper (it's a paper on which they write who came to visit date time signature and name) So my complaint about the AC was well within the warrenty period but after that visit they just purposely waited it out and avoided taking my calls for the next 2 weeks when the warrenty ended they called us again and asked stright up money for the broken part stating that now the unit is out of warranty even through I made the complaint weeks before it ended. After this the AC couldn't be used and due to some medical issues in my family i wasn't able to keep up because every time I did they would just cut my call whenever I tried to reach the head guy of the service center. So for the better part of the last year that AC was just kept as a show piece and even the company wasn't interested of contacting us even after trying to file the issue every time to them.
Well Cut to last week I lodged a complaint against Daikin in the Indian consumer forum and within 2 hours of it I get a call from Daikin's Grievance Team asking me about the issue after explaining it to them, they sent an another team on the same day to check the unit again and in the Lastest visit the guy said the unit is shutting on and off and on the service paper said Unit not working. 2 days ago I get a call from their office saying that you still have to pay for the part since it's out of warranty, I was busy with some work and couldn't talk at the moment anyway I just said that i wouldn't be paying them since I raised the issue while the AC was in warrenty and won't be taking down the case from the consumer forum and disconnected the call. There was no further updates about it after that but yesterday 2 men came from Daikin with parts and wanted to start the repair but due to a power shortage in the building they said they'll come today to fix it
My Question is
-
Should I let the fix the AC now or should I wait till the case goes on in the consumer forum ?
-
Will letting them fix it now would later on make my case invalid and deny me my compensation?
-
And if I do let them fix, I would like to ask them to change whole unit since it's an electronic machine i reckon it would shut down within few months since it's already showing signs
Please give me some insights about this cause it's my first time dealing with such type of scenario.
Guys if you have got any experience of using the above brands, please let me know any issues if you have faced up till now. I'm a bit confused if paying a premium for Daikin is really worth it.
I’ve been trying to figure out if Daikin ACs are still worth buying in 2026, and honestly the more I read, the more confusing it got. Some people swear by them, others say the quality has dropped a lot. So I went through a bunch of Reddit threads to see what actual users are saying instead of just specs and brand hype.
Here’s the breakdown based on real user experiences.
What People Still Like About Daikin
1. Cooling is actually really good
This is the one thing almost everyone agrees on.
Daikin’s airflow (especially the Coanda-style upward airflow) makes the cooling feel less harsh. It spreads evenly instead of blasting cold air directly at you.
So yeah, not just cooling fast, but cooling well.
2. Older Daikin units were tanks
If you talk to someone who bought a Daikin 5–10 years ago, chances are they’re still happy.
That says a lot.
3. Decent energy efficiency
Their inverter models are generally efficient enough. Not always class-leading, but not bad either.
If you get a good unit with proper installation, your electricity bills shouldn’t shock you.
Where Things Start Getting Messy
1. Newer models = inconsistent quality
This comes up again and again.
A lot of users feel the newer India-manufactured units don’t match the quality of older imported ones.
Things people complain about:
• cheaper internal components
• faster wear and tear
• not the same “premium” feel
2. Service is hit or miss (and this matters a lot)
This is probably the biggest red flag.
Some users had smooth experiences, but many didn’t.
Real issues mentioned:
• delayed service
• hard to get spare parts
• technicians pushing unnecessary repairs
That’s not a one-off complaint.
3. Maintenance can creep up
Especially with newer units, some users reported:
• more frequent gas refills
• part replacements
• higher long-term cost than expected
Not universal, but common enough to notice.
How Daikin Compares to Other Brands
This is where things get interesting.
Mitsubishi Electric
Usually considered a step above Daikin in terms of reliability and build.
Downside: expensive.
Panasonic
Gets recommended a lot for:
• better features (WiFi, smart control)
• more consistent service
• good balance of price and performance
O General
Known for raw cooling power and durability, especially in extreme heat.
But again, service complaints show up here too.
So… Should You Buy a Daikin AC?
Short answer: Yes, but be selective.
Daikin isn’t a bad brand. It’s just not the “safe default choice” it used to be.
You need to be a bit smarter about:
• which model you pick
• where you’re buying from
• service availability in your area
Recommended Daikin AC Models (2026)
| Model | Capacity | Star Rating | Best For | Key Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daikin MTKL50U | 1.5 Ton | 3 Star | Budget buyers | Reliable cooling, widely used, good value for money |
| Daikin FTKM50U | 1.5 Ton | 5 Star | Heavy daily usage | More energy efficient, quieter, better for long hours |
| Daikin ATKL50U | 1.5 Ton | 3 Star | Value seekers | Similar performance to MTKL, choose based on pricing |
| Daikin 1 Ton Inverter | 1 Ton | 3 Star | Small rooms | Lower power consumption, good for limited usage |
Quick way to choose
| Situation | What makes sense |
|---|---|
| Just want something that works, not too expensive | MTKL (3 Star) |
| AC runs most of the day | 5 Star (FTKM) |
| Getting different prices offline vs online | Pick the cheaper 3-star option |
| Small bedroom or single person use | 1 Ton model |
When You Should Skip Daikin
You might want to consider other brands if:
• service in your city is known to be poor
• you want zero hassle long-term
• you care more about features (WiFi, app control, etc.)
In those cases, Panasonic is often the safer bet right now.
Final Take
Daikin today feels like a brand in transition.
Still great at what it originally did well (cooling), but not as consistent as before when it comes to:
• build quality
• after-sales experience
If you get a good unit and have decent local service, you’ll probably be happy.
If not, it can turn into one of those “should’ve gone with something else” purchases.
I recently had a Daikin DR97MC installed and the very first time I ran it I knew it was going to drive me crazy.
The blower makes this extremely ultra low frequency sound that I can hear throughout the entire house. And it's not the sound of the air coming out of the vents. This sound literally comes up through the floor from the unit itself.
It sounds like a constantly modulating wuhwuhwuhwuh but extremely fast and extremely low in pitch. Almost like the sound of air being buffeted or like the sound a car engine makes when it's being over-revved.
I've had my tech come out and he says he can't hear it. My spouse can't hear it. But to me it's so... clear that I can hear above most other sounds like the TV.
I'm going mad. Can anyone tell me anything about this?
I am thinking to buy Daikin AC and wanted to know about it's service in kanpur. Can you please help if your are using this brand's AC?
Thanks in advance
Is there anyone who is using Daikin ACs here? How is the service, how fast are you able to get the service guy to visit when you need him?
I was considering LG because service network is good. Any thoughts?
