r/dataanalysis on Reddit: Starting Salary for Data Analytics
May 1, 2025 -

Hello all! I was wondering what is the average starting salary for a data analyst? I've seen ranges from 80-120k (for consulting firms).

For context, I have an M.S in a data analytics, graduated from a top ranked program in my major, have 2-3 years of experience with data analytics & consulting projects, some national presentations, multiple leadership positions, a recent consulting internship, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there's only 30 individuals of my major located in the state of the job location.

Could I negotiate at the higher end of this range (like around 120k) or is that being too unrealistic? I've seen competitors offer similar amounts for high quality candidates, and according to a recent management consulting salary report, $112k is the average (unknown if its for large or mid size firms) base salary for M.S graduates. I'm applying to a mid size firm (where the max compensation was 105k according to previous year data).

Thank you very much!!!

r/analytics on Reddit: Realistic salary expectations for a data analyst?
July 4, 2023 -

Hi all. I am one semester away from graduating from a business analytics master’s degree from a CUNY school in NYC. I have one internship under my belt and another one underway. I have 6+ previous work experience in a completely different field, so a job coming out of graduation wouldn’t be my “first” job in the workforce.

Coding languages and platforms I am proficient in: R, Python, MS Excel, SAS, SQL, Tableau

What I want to know is, what is a realistic salary I should be looking for based on my experience? Is 85k too low, too high, or just right? Is there opportunity for me to find a $100k+ role? If so, any companies I should target for that salary? Any and all advice appreciated!

Edit: I just graduated, and landed a 95k base, TC: 110k job!

I’m considering completing a few projects after going through years of courses on Maven Analytics and transitioning from a 15-year sales career to data analytics; however, my family can’t take a step back in my pay (170K).

What are realistic starting salaries? Is it even worth it, as AI is looming in the background?

I see many experienced analysts unemployed, but others who just broke into it succeed greatly (Chris French, who provides incredible insights on LinkedIn). I question many LinkedIn influencers because most now sell courses.

These salary ranges come from Oyster which is an HR/payment platform so these are the averages people are being paid by companies that process their payments through them.

  • Data Analyst: Mid and Senior level salary varies a lot from 65k to 130k and there's not much difference between them.

For some comparison:

  • Software Engineer: Salaries range from 90k to 110k for juniors. Mid 120k-140k and Seniors have a pretty wide range of 150k-200k

  • UX Designer: Senior can range from 80k on the lowest percentile to 165k on the highest, average at 125k so not bad at all actually!

  • Project Manager: Very good salary range from 120k to 160k.

  • Customer Success: Salaries range a lot with most principal CSMs at 160k, seniors at 130k. Still though the range in customer success is pretty big.

What happened to this Data Analyst field, automated out? I know salaries used to be way higher and people were talking about this field like the next big thing, but now it's incredibly underpaid and it seems like the job offerings are nowhere to be seen.

February 8, 2021 -

This is my intuitive breakdown of what analysts can expect to make in 2021. Do you agree?

Early career, 0-3 years experience: $50-75k

This include college grads (undergraduate and masters) and people transitioning into the analytics field. If you're coming from an adjacent field like engineering, you may be towards the top of this range or even exceeding it.

Sr. Analyst or 3-5 years experience: $75-100k

Many Sr. Analysts probably fall somewhere between 80-90k. But definitely possible to make a solid six figure income with enough experience.

Lead/Principal Analyst: $100-120k

I don't think these titles are super common but they certainly exist. This is a great way to make a lot of money without having direct reports. You probably need closer to 10 years of experience to climb higher into six figures.

Analytics Manager: $100-130k

Some managers may make less, but this range probably captures most people. It's a great stepping stone to director positions where salaries are higher.

r/SQL on Reddit: Data Analyst/Senior Data Analyst SALARY
March 14, 2021 -

Hey guys,

So I made a post before about how to get a job as a data analyst, and got lots of great answers. I've been looking through various sites like zip recruiter, indeed, linkedin, builtinnyc, etc for data analyst salary insights, and it seems that for the most part, senior data analysts make 6 figures mostly, on avg around 110k, according to builtinnyc, and as high as 175k. Any senior data analysts here make 150k+ or even 200k+? I'm also assuming that those who make 150k+ might be using ML and stats/algorithms in addition to SQL/python/tableau, etc (the typical data analyst tool sets) Again, I just want to thank everyone who reads this and provides insight here for someone looking into this field!

tl:dr how much do you make as a data analyst/senior data analyst + YOE?

Hi!

I have aspirations to become a data analyst in NYC as I am roughly 40 minutes away by train and can commute there. What would an estimated average salary be and what skills should I master? I am a rutgers undergrad at the moment with 2 years left so I have plenty of time to Learn SQL, tableu, python etc. Would an internship allow me to be able to negotiate my salary? (as the goal is 70k!)

r/cscareerquestions on Reddit: Is becoming a data analyst still a good career path in 2026?
March 15, 2026 -

Hi everyone,

I’m currently exploring different career paths in tech, and data analytics is one of the fields I’m seriously considering. Before committing several months to learning it, I wanted to ask people who are already working in the field for some honest advice.

A bit about me:

I enjoy analytical thinking and understanding patterns in systems. I like figuring out why things happen the way they do and making sense of data or behavior. I’m interested in technology, digital products, games, and user behavior, and I find the idea of using data to understand decisions and trends very appealing. My major was Business Administration and I'm 26 years old.

At the same time, I’m trying to approach this realistically. I want to choose a field that has a healthy job market and good long-term opportunities.

My long-term goal would be to work in tech or product-driven companies and ideally build a career that could eventually open opportunities internationally.

I’m not choosing this field purely for money, but I do want a stable and reasonably well-paid career.

Before investing a lot of time into learning data analytics, I wanted to ask a few questions to people who are already working in the industry.

Here are the things I’m trying to understand:

  1. Would you recommend data analytics as a career for someone starting today?

  2. How does the current job market look for junior data analysts?

  3. Is it difficult for someone with no prior experience to land their first job?

  4. Realistically, how long does it take to reach a “junior-ready” level if someone studies consistently?

  5. What do junior data analyst salaries typically look like?

  6. What tools, programming languages, or skills should someone focus on learning to become a junior data analyst?

  7. How concerned should beginners be about AI affecting data analyst jobs in the next 5–10 years?

Any honest insights or advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
