After several months of joblessness and a brief month at McDonald's, I finally got an offer as a TEMPORARY Data Entry Clerk ($12/Hr, TX). But now I'm thinking to myself: besides the money, what will I gain from this job that will help me land a better job?
I studied a very useless degree International Affairs and graduated with even more a useless GPA (1.8) and very poor research and writing skills (though I'm privately working on them now). I have gaps in my employment history too, so you get the drift: I'm very unemployable. Yet I want to change things.
I'm elated about this job but I'm also sad that it's practically useless. What can I do? What are your thoughts?
Take the job.
Moving forward in your career can happen in so many ways.
Connections are HUGE.
Also is doing a great job.
Be a good coworker. Don’t complain all the time. Don’t gossip. Don’t talk badly about others.
If you don’t find yourself moving up in any way in 9 months to a year, start applying at other places. Having a good work record is a plus.
First of all, congratulations on the offer. I think being excited for a job is a great thing. I don’t have a background in Data Entry, however I don’t see why you won’t be able to apply your skills from that job to another.
My background was in fashion design, had an alterations job then got a graphic design position. That being said, you can take your skills and go a different route.
It’s how you present yourself and applying your skills to the next position. I’d imagine you would be able to transition to managerial positions later down the line, if that’s what you’re interested in doing. Or something completely different. The world is your oyster!
Best of luck!
