How does Datadog calculate host billing?
Datadog measures your host count every hour and bills you based on the 99th percentile, discarding only the top 1% of hours. In practice this means you pay close to your peak, not your average. Autoscaling groups can inflate this significantly.

r/sre on Reddit: Datadog pricing is a mess, so we built a calculator to estimate
December 14, 2024 -

Hey folks,
We work at SigNoz and frequently talk to teams migrating from Datadog to our platform. A recurring complaint we hear is how confusing, unpredictable, and often expensive Datadog’s pricing can be.

So, we decided to dig in and build a simple calculator to help estimate what your Datadog bill might look like. Here’s a detailed blog post explaining the different components of Datadog pricing, along with the calculator link:
https://signoz.io/blog/datadog-pricing/

We’d love to get feedback from the SRE community:

  • Is this calculator helpful?

  • What additional parameters or scenarios should we consider?

  • Any other pain points around pricing or cost estimation you’d like to see addressed?

We’re genuinely trying to make sense of this for everyone, so any input is much appreciated!

Datadog pricing often includes many incentives and discounts which would be difficult for a third party to integrate into their cost estimation tool. Edit: Vendor-specific cost estimation tools are rarely reliable and in worst cases, untrustworthy. The business value of cost estimation tools is to compare vendor X to vendor Y, where vendor Y always outperforms in some preselected metric in some very specific use cases and scenarios. The irony of course is that every vendor WANTS to charge Datadog pricing - they just don't have the scale yet to do so. Experienced customers (i.e. mid to large cap companies with healthy o11y budgets) already know this and in many cases, are willing to suffer Datadog's pricing because of convenience and familiarity engineers already have with their product offerings. If they decide to migrate, its often to homespun solution that is crafted to their specific orgs needs. Shopify's Grafana + in-house stack to mind. The o11y space is incredibly crowded at the moment and becoming even more crowded with players Dash0/SigNoz, etc., these upstarts simply don't have the scale of features that Datadog, or now Grafana, already have. Obtaining this feature parity is unfortunately table stakes. Established players will be delivering new, novel features while the startups spin their wheels trying to just catch up. Customers don't want to spend $$$ just to lag behind the market with an under-featured vendor.

Weird, never had this problem. They have a pricing page and a usage page. What's harder to predict is what your usage is actually going to be and no calculator can help with that.
