If I use this term, the student is awake but doesn't appear engaged in the lesson. They're staring at nothing or something without really paying attention to it. They are slow to realize they're being addressed, may seem startled that I'm talking to them and then have no idea what's been going on. Basically, it's daydreaming to me.
