Trying to learn how to ID vintage. Can anyone tell me the decade from whence this sequin dress comes, and explain how you can tell?

This is not vintage. You can tell because of a few things:

  1. It’s made in China. Most clothing did not start appearing with that label until post 1997. Up until that point most clothing manufactured in China was made in British occupied Hong Kong and would either read made in “Hong Kong” or “Made in Crown British Colony Hong Kong”. While this isn’t definitely a set-in-stone rule it’s often a safe assumption that when “Made in China” appears with a modern font, modern machine stitching, and sloppy/loose ends, it’s the product of exported manufacturing and is of a recent era.

  2. The brand. Always do a search for the brand if you aren’t sure. Aryn K is a modern brand appearing on the ASOS website, Lulus, Amazon (a big tell something is mass manufactured and not vintage) and on reseller websites like Poshmark.

  3. The stitching. Vintage clothing has certain types of stitching and it’s usually very well done. While I can’t see the stitching throughout the dress itself I can see from the label that it’s sloppily done machine stitching.

This is a nice piece but it’s not vintage. In the future, look for where things were manufactured, look for care labels, and look for guild labels/union labels. In the US you can look for “Made in USA” or an ILGWU tag and that will be an indicator a piece is vintage (especially the latter!).

Vintage and Thrift Routes SLC
This is the perfect question for me. I don’t know exactly where you are, so I’ll just start at one and then go down the list and you can start at the one closest to you. 1.IconoCLAD 414 W 300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84101 – LOVE this place 2. Blue Velvet Bunny Near 300 S, just a couple blocks from IconoCLAD so it’s walkable – not my fav but definitely a fun stop. 3. Decades Vintage Clothing 627 S State St, Salt Lake City, UT 84111 – more vintagey than “thrifty/trendy”. 4. Atelier In the same area as Decades and Blue Velvet Bunny, so walkable – More curated and boutique-style. 5. Vantage Downtown, near the others – more modern vintage finds. Think Instagram-worthy. 6. Uptown Cheapskate 380 W 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84101 – I would be shocked if you didn’t find something good here. 7. Goodwill Outlet (aka The Bins) Somewhere downtown-ish (you’ll want to map it) – Pay-by-the-pound thrift. A bit chaotic, but fun if you love a hunt… just wash your hands after 😅😂 Hope that helps!! Style Inspiration From Previous Decades/Eras
Your moodboard is so pretty; I love the way you used color in it! I definitely enjoy inspiration from other eras, but am not very focused or consistent about it. One of my interests is adapting traditional clothing from my ancestral cultures to a modern context. In my case, a lot of that is kilts, which I guess just translates to loving plaid, lol. I also enjoy Victorian and Edwardian eras, and Renaissance I suppose, as well as 1930s/1940s because I watched a loooooot of those movies when I was a kid and they hold some nostalgia. Right now, I have been interested in Victorian underwear because I'm considering upgrading my loungewear a bit. More on reddit.com

Mixing decades

Tbh there's no right or wrong way to dress. You don't have to be like an influencer at all. Imo, I'd try styling different things together and seeing if they match (colors, clothing textures, patterns, etc.) without really worrying about whether the decades match up
