Deep Sofas in Small Space Help
We have a smaller sitting room off the kitchen (14'2" x 13'3"). We end spending a lot of time in this room even though it's smaller so I want comfy coaches for our family. The only way to work the space is to have 2 couches facing each other. I love the Kipton sofa from Arhaus. I'd like to update our 2 different sofas to 2 matching Kipton sofas. At the showroom we all really liked the deep sofa (44").

r/furniture_talk on Reddit: What is an extra DEEP sofa or comfy couch you recommend?
April 5, 2025 -

I am looking for the best extra deep sofa that has more than 27" seating them, so extra deep compared to the standard sofa depth of 21-22". Anything that is comfortable, durable and high quality would be nice!

Maybe something custom made? Or customizable at least, I know there are some brands that do custom sofas so you can choose your depth. Be nice to be able to choose your firmness too! And if possible pet friendly. I know asking for a lot hahaha

Maybe something like this picture or something similar would be awesome.

Edit: I ended up getting a Daphne Deep Sofa due to its customization options like cushion firmness and depth (I chose 48" deep or 31 seating depth which is great!)

June 14, 2024 -

I currently have the Z gallerie extra deep Ventura couch. I have had it for about 6 YEARS. It held up absolutely great! It’s actually still great but I am moving and it’s time for a change. Can you recommend a similar style and high quality couch ?

I can make a few recommendations as I’m on a flight with a bit of time. When you mention high quality there always a bit of confusion as to what quality is and looks like from a price point so let’s go over a few things to look out for first with some brand mentions and recs along the way. Most of these brands have a similar sofa or can make a custom extra deep sofa. The most important things to look for in my opinion are- 1-Foam 2-Fabric and Tailoring 3-Suspension TBH -Frames are not as important in the higher end as we all use hardwood or cnc plywood frames with plenty of glue that will outlast us all. 1- Foam quality is the first thing manufacturers cut to add margin so I like to know this first. For a high quality sofa you want a 2.3 - 2.5 density foam. That would be my first question for any upholstered item purchase. This is what fails first and shows wear. We call this fall off. How quickly does a cushion go from a A to a C. All cushions fall off but a 1.8 lbs (foam quality is rated by its weight) density foam (typically a lower end sofa ie Havertys, PB (My old stomping ground and first furniture design and engineering job), West elm) will have this foam. Truthfully speaking these sofas in my opinion are a 2-5 year sofa. Of course this varies and a bit subjective but in general. With maintenance maybe longer. That said, many people have experience with these lasting longer and I’m sure have opinions but generally speaking this is what we see in the market. Then you have the 2.0 lbs density brands which is most common in the mid tier range like crate, interior define, to name a few. These are in my opinion (and of course can vary based on a ton of thing like use, users weight, sitting styles, etc) are a 5-7 year sofa. When we start to move into “quality”you get in the 2.3 lbs foam and beyond. Brands like room and board (some of their sofas), BenchMade (my former company) and some of the boutique online brands use this foam. These foams tend to hold up for a good amount of time. I would say these brands are a 7-10 based on a ton a variables but generally speaking. Lastly and the highest quality would be the 2.5 to 3.0 (commercial grade) companies. Typically you will find these in the smaller online brands like Medley, MadeRight CA (my most recent brand) and the custom shops. Leaving 3.0 for the comercial grade sofas for lobbies, hotels, etc. These 2.5 lbs foam sofas are the 10+ year sofas that could last a good long time given maintenance and care. Fabrics are next and this includes the tailoring. Thick, high rub count, performance grade fabrics are great for cleaning and longevity. Polyesters and Polly blends seems to work great and higher quality Polly’s have minimal pilling. Ask for these fabrics. Of course there are some amazing, soft and durable 100$ and up per yard fabrics from companies like Kravet, Maharam, Knoll that are amazing but really add up on a higher end sofa and really really pricy. $8-10k range for standard sofa. The magic really happens in the tailoring and how the fabric is cut and sewn. To large of a pattern (stretch plays a huge role) can just wreck a sofa with crazy wrinkles and butt impression marks creating to much fluffing for the end user and a tired and saggy look a few months in. A good way to judge this is to see if you can kind of pinch or grab a handful of fabric anywhere on the cushion. To much fabric kind of sucks and in general shows laziness in the paterns, sewing and final cushion fit. Then there is the RH cloud sofa but that’s a whole other can of worms. Suspension plays huge role. Most higher end brands are all over the place with these materialls and methods. Some use webbing and if pulled and tensioned right this can be good but kinda up to the guy who’s doing it to be consitent and not lose steam by the end of the day. Personally I’m a fan of a thick gauge sinius springs because it is consitent and doesn’t rely on a upholster to keep things consistent across the entire sofa. Of course 8 way hand tie is a great suspension but this is only great if tied correctly (a lost art) and in a frame that is tall enough to hide them. Many modern thin or high legs styles can’t use this spring method which is always left out of a “what makes a great quality sofa” Google search that happens at the start of one’s sofa deep dive. lol. So hope this atleast helps you know what to look for and more importantly what to ask when looking for a truely great “quality” sofa. A little long winded I know. Sorry about that. Reminder disclaimer: please take all of this in general as brands change these things on the regular and this is in my opinion as a multi sofa brand creator/owner and furniture industry veteran.
