kasie, it will help if you give us the exact model of your Dell. The POST diagnostic beeps for most Dell laptops : · One= Possible system board failure —BIOS ROM checksum failure · Two= No RAM detected NOTE: If you installed or replaced the memory module, ensure that the memory module is seated properly. · Three= Possible system board failure — Chipset error · Four= RAM read/write failure · Five= Real Time Clock failure · Six= Video card or chip failure · Seven= Processor failure · Eight= Display failure · So, there could be a problem either with the CMOS battery or the motherboard. Hope this helps, good luck. Answer from oldturkey03 on ifixit.com

Anyone that has built a computer themselves or experienced a hardware failure will tell you that beeps usually mean something is wrong at the hardware level. A software upgrade, unless it is e a BIOS upgrade, usually doesn't cause the problem.   Early motherboards beeped in a certain pattern for different types of hardware failures but that may not be so true anymore with today's advanced diagnostic devices. You still get beeps, but there is no pattern anymore for different issues.  There is a button cell battery usually a 2032 button cell, like that found in hearing aids that generally is good for about three years; you can buy these at any walgreens, walmart, target etc.  This battery backs up the hardware information that the system accesses at start up (i.e. the CMOS information) it also backs up information such as custom bios settings that you may have made and your clock).  If your clock is always wrong when you cold start from being off and unplugged then there's a chance the battery has died.  Thank goodness the battery is very accessible in this machine, just take off the back cover and it's right there.  On my old 17R you have to pull out all the guts to get to it on the bottom of the motherboard.  Sometimes motherboards may sit on the shelf for awhile before your machine is assembled and the button cell runs all that time thus you get it and it seems to fail way too soon when it really didn't.  When I buy a new motherboard I just go buy fresh batteries before I build to avoid any issues with that coming up.  In some systems a dead battery can indeed cause the machine to fail to start with a beep code.   Beep codes repeat until you turn it off.  If you've had the machine more than a year or two try replacing the battery, it is not a difficult procedure all you have to do is remove a few screws and gently pry off the back using a credit card or plastic pry tool so you don't damage the plastic.   You seem to say this is intermitting, still a good troubleshoot to replace the battery not all manufacturers are good about only using fresh batteries god knows how long they may have sat on the shelf before being installed in your machine. I hope this takes care of your problem.

Inspiron 660s, 5 beeps repeatedly on power up | DELL Technologies
December 19, 2018 - But the computer still gave the 5 repeated beeps. With a sigh, i closed the computer casing, and tried powering it on one more time. This time it was able to power on, and after setting the BIOS date and time, it booted into Windows. But when I touched the computer, the system froze and the screen went blank. After that, the computer could not power on any more, with the power led light staying a steady orange.

January 12, 2019 - Reseat all the internal cable (reseat - unplug and plug back in). If that does not help, disconnect the hard drive, and optical drives and then try. If there is still a problem I would suspect the motherboard.

February 3, 2023 -

This

My laptop tried to update itself despite having no connection. When I pressed the power button the display went black and now isn't coming back. It still turns on but stops at a black screen, so the display still works at least.

I let the battery run out thinking it just needed to reset itself, but now when I turn it back on it does a 3-4 beep code:

beep beep beep, (pause) beep beep beep beep

That loops every few seconds.

It doesn't have any lights on it, so I track it being on with a game controller that lights up.

How can I fix this?

What do the 5 Beeps on DELL Indicate?
August 15, 2023 - In case CMOS battery is faulty or voltage is below 3V you need to change battery with new one. How you will know what is CMOS voltage? You can read CMOS voltage in BIOS or UEFI and you can check CMOS voltage by using Voltmeter.

r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: 5 Beeps, No Display. I’ve read that this indicates a GPU Error. However…
June 30, 2024 -

Just built my first Gaming PC, and I’m in the process of testing it. Now, I’m running into issues when booting it up: I hear 5 quick beeps while a red light flashes for a few seconds, and my monitor shows no display. From what I’ve read on Google, and watched on YouTube, the 5 quick beeps indicate a GPU error.

But I’m puzzled: my GPU properly clicked into its dock, it’s been screwed tightly in place, hooked up to the power source, the GPU fans are working, and the HDMI & Display Port are evidently working because the monitor is on, yet there’s no display due to the aforementioned 5 error beeps.

Does anyone know what else could be wrong, and what should I do?
