Changing boot order in Dell 5577 (windows 10)
Your best route is to go into the BIOS and change the boot order, it'll likely read as boot drive for your HDD already there, so you should be able to see some options from USB port to the SSD you installed. More on reddit.com

There are several ways to start the Advanced Boot Menu. Route 1: Press the Start button. Click the Settings app from the Start menu. Select Recovery. Click Restart now for the Advanced startup option. Press the Restart now button on the dialogue box to confirm. This will start your computer in the Windows Recovery Environment. Route 2: Press the Start button. Press the Power button. Hold the Shift key down whilst pressing the Restart option. Route 3: Press Win + X Select Windows Terminal (Admin). Then enter shutdown.exe /r /o in PowerShell and press Enter. Route 4: Right-click anywhere on your desktop and select New. Click the Shortcut submenu option. Input shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 0 within the location text box and press the Next button. Enter Advanced Startup Options within the shortcut name text box. Click the Finish option. Now double-click the Advanced Startup Options desktop shortcut to access Windows Recovery Environment. Route 5: Force shutdown and restart your computer using the power button about three to four times consecutively. This will make your computer enter the Windows Recovery Environment. r/Dell on Reddit: Changing boot order in Dell 5577 (windows 10)
September 23, 2024 -

edit: fixed by changing "boot option" from UEFI to legacy. When using "legacy", the NVME SSD showed up in the boot options, so I was able to select that to #1.

Hi all,
I would like to change the boot order in my Dell 5577 running windows 10.

The current order is:
HDD
Network
SSD

The SSD was the latest purchase. I installed it in the frame, installed windows freshly on it, and have it running. However, since it is last in the order, windows still boots automatically from the older HDD. Even if I disable the HDD, it will still run via the network and start some diagnosis.

I have seen online two methods of changing boot order:

  1. via BIOS -> the problem for me is that the boot menu in bios doesn't show any drives

  2. other method was via Launch the Start menu and open Settings. Then, go to System/Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced Options > restart computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings

problem: UEFI firmware settings don't show up in my menu

Could I be missing some option from the BIOS?

r/techsupport on Reddit: Can't get into advanced boot options on windows 7, dell xps 8500
January 29, 2021 -

My computer recently had some hard drive issues and now i need to repair it via advanced boot options. However, only the f12 key works on my computer and it only leads to boot drive selection, diagnostics, and bios.

The f8 key doesnt work and if i press it the f12 option appears at the top right corner. The f2 key takes me straight to bios.

I ran a diagnostic and it confirmed that the hard drive is failing. Is there any way to repair my hard drive through the bios or do i need to get windows 7 on a usb?

Addressing first the issue, rather than the direct question

So how can I enter the advanced boot menu during the Windows 10 start-up sequence in order to discard the hibernation state ?

This is a step which is not actually needed. If Windows fails to recover a hibernation state, it will automatically resume with a normal startup.

The issue that happened to you rather is connected to the fact that you've configured your power button to send Windows into hibernation, instead of shutting it down.

So, every time you tried to turn it on again, it resumed a somehow corrupt system state from hibernation: the hibernation was resumed correctly, but you just continued to hibernate some sort of endless system loop.

The correct thing to do when the system is not recoverable through Ctrl+Alt+Del is to force-shutdown by pressing the power button for 10-15 seconds. Once this is done, Windows will detect it wasn't shut down correctly, and will resume from scratch (and there will be no hibernation state which needs deletion).

Side-Notes:

I agree that force-crashing Windows 3 times is a bad idea, especially when it is totally unnecessary.

Usually, when Windows is in an endless loop, at some point there will be no more hard-disk activity going on: that's the right moment to long-press the power button.

Sending Windows 10 into hibernation makes only sense if you want to retake your work session exactly from where you left it. Otherwise, for system stability it is much better to use the built-in hybrid startup you mentioned in your question.

Answering the direct question

  • create a Windows Installer on USB
  • Change boot sequence in BIOS so to boot from the USB
  • Once the installer has started, select "Repair your computer"
  • Enjoy recovery mode
